Clicking Sound When Putting Gear In Reverse

I couldn't find any discussion of this issue that popped up. I have an automatic 04 TL w/navi. After 2000 miles, the transmission developed a CLICKING sound when I put the gear in reverse. It doesn't happen from park to reverse, but does occur when I put it in reverse from drive. I am at a complete stop when I change gears. It does it all the time. Since it didn't start happening until 2000 miles, I am assuming this is not normal.

I have this same clicking noise on my 05TL when putting the car into reverse. Also had this in my 2000 V6 Accord Cpe. When I asked Honda tech what was the problem, he said it was normal. Dont know what to think with all the tranny problems Honda/Acura has.

I have the same problem

Yeah I have the same problem, it clicks, almost sounds like its not right. I can believe its something to do with it being a Honda Tranny. My 02 odyssey makes a "thump" sound when putting it in reverse.

I wouldnt worry about it unless there was actual delay from the point when you put the car in reverse and 2-3 seconds later it would click instead of instantly.

I had tranny problems before on my 01 Maxima and it had a delay. However the maxima always made a little thumping sound too when putting it in reverse and then it blew at 65k miles.

Do a search for "ABS check" or "brake system check".

That sound/click should be your ABS system doing a test.

You should ask the moderators to move this to the main forum, as it does not relate to Bluetooth, Navi, or the stereo. More people will read it there. Send a PM to one of them.

That could be it or could it.

Checked the threads on ABS and about how a Tech told someone that it was ABS doing self test. Doesnt ABS do self test anyway once you start driving, in like 100-200 feet?

Who really cares though its covered for a long time. If it goes it goes! Until then on!!!

It has nothing to do with how old your car is

My car has about 650 miles on it and its been happening since day 1. So I dont think it has anything to do with your car hitting 2000 miles. To be honest does not even bother me, seems normal. Its not like you have to drive in reverse all the time and even if you had to it only happens once, its not recurring. Just

Our 5AT TLs have tons of "sound".
  1. Shift from P to R, "clunk"

  2. Shift between R and D, "click" or "clunk" (rowdy045, are you talking about this one?)

  3. Move forward in the first time after resting the car for a long time, "thump" or "flap"

  4. Step on the brake, "click"

  5. Do the 3-points turn, while stepping on the brake, "click" from outsides

GARAGE has collected some "sound" threads... maybe you could get answers you want from there... most of them are frequently heard in Honda/Acura vehicles...

When I still had my 04 5AT, I had the clicking sound when I put the gear into "R" from "D". Sometimes it's more noticeable. Other times it doesn't.

Sounds like a normal noise to me. Honda transmissions have made this noise for years. Every automatic transmission from the 1986 Legend & Integra on up have made it to a certain degree.

On some of the 1st generation Integras & Legends it would get worse if the car was not at a complete stop before shifting from R to D or D to R. Many people had a tendency to shift before coming to a complete stop, causing the click or thump to become a grinding, growling crunch.
