Center console metal trim pieces are cold

I've got an '08 Type-S that I bought in July. I've noticed that the metal trim pieces on both sides of the center console get quite cold when I'm running the AC. Anyone know if this is normal? I'm guessing that the cold air must get to the rear vents some how and was wondering if there might be a leak?

Thanks,

mine does it too. The entire center console gets cold - some say it's a "feature" to keep drinks cold. But i swear I can feel air coming out of the seam on either side, right about at my knee.

the console trim and center console is cold because of the ducting. The ducting for the rear a/c vents pass though the sides of the center console.

Yeah guys don't you wonder how the air gets to those rear vents? Through ducts run on the sides of the center console.....In the winter we're going to hear "Hey guys the metal trim gets hot in the winter"

don't get madd guys I'm just playin around

I'm going to bump this LOL...

I sooo completely do not understand. I was thinking that it was a feature, because I have 2 TLs, and one has it, one doesn't. so it's not like they all do it. And I've never felt any gust of air come from under it. It even stays cold when the heat is on, so I'm thinking it couldn't possibly be from the AC. Is there a part, whether OEM or aftermarket that does this? I'm dying to find out to install on my other TL. So helpful.

like all girls, you're thinking too hard.

if you tear into the console, you'll see that it is ducting

If one doesn't, then it's likely that you just didn't leave the AC on long enough to cool down the trim, or the rear vent is turned off.

LMFAO!! Jeeze, thanks LOL
I read the above posts, but wasnt making sense to me was the fact that one does it and the other doesn't. Wouldn't they be the same, since they are the same cars?

The 04 was bought from a small dealership who had no clue about the cars history, came with a cat delete and iPod hookup so thought maybe whoever owned it previous could have done some handiwork on it as well.

I think I'm going to change my name to MrAlyTL that way I don't feel lick such a d*ck when I post from now on hahaha

It does it even when the AC is completely off... Even stays cold when the heat is pumpin!

Just try to lay your forearm and/or face on it. We've had 100+ days here in Kansas City for almost a week and a half.....

Had my center console apart today and thought of this thread (sadly). Here you can see the AC/heat ducts running along both sides of the console:

Thanks for taking my comment like a champ!!

the only way to see if there has been something done to your 04, would be to take out the console!!!

I always have my rear vent closed, and mine is still closed. I assume that is b/c the vent gets closed at the vent so cold air still gets pushed through the ducting.

I love it keeps my drinks cold

Thanks,
Definitely not normal. Do a 3x3 and change out your 3rd and 4th pressure switches. Good luck.

Yea, so much for being lazy LOL. I just figured someone would chime in, like yea, so & so makes the piece and then I could order it & wait for its arrival all from the comfort of my couch, instead of that 200 degree garage lol.
