Carbon Fiber Hood Feeler Thread

Hey guys...

As many of you know....we have been toying with the idea of making Carbon Fiber hoods more readily available for 3G TL'ers. My first question is....

1. How many would be interested before I invest time and money in it. This would be a single sided Carbon Fiber Hood.....not double sided.

2. How many would be willing to pick up here in Indianapolis. I am very leery about shipping items this large via freight trucks, ect. which is what has held me up this far. If I have at least 2 or 3, maybe 4 interested within driving range....I will see it gets done. But I am worried about the prospect of taking an expensive part and shipping it across the United States that has the kind of qualities that CF has. Plus...I dont want to invest $ in several hoods only to have em hanging on my shop wall in the end because nobody wants to drive to Indianapolis to get em. lol

3. Proposed Price = Around $725 pickup at my dock in Indianapolis
(or possibly picked up from my home on the weekends? I can have it moved to my home if necessary for a weekend pickup)

Lead time on these....could be made available as early as two weeks. I dont mess around...if I am gonna do it...I do it!

If I still lived in Indy, in a heart beat! I just can't afford what would be a $1000 hood after shipping.

Note...and so it IS said outwardly....this is NOT to bypass any AZ vendor program here....I would re-up my vendor status at that time if we go to sale with these under more or less what would be a "group buy" situation. Been here too long to screw over the AZ family....so no worries!

I'd be interested. I have friends in St Louis, so I think that screams ROAD TRIP! Just a couple of questions- Any chance of a custom hood, by that I mean raising the center of the hood up 1", kind of like a semi raised hood? Would it use the stock mounting hardware?

Again- you are #1 !

A double sided hood has the CF look top and bottom....a single sided hood is just black (typically) on the bottom and has the CF at the top.

For example....pictured below is a DOUBLE sided carbon fiber hood....

As you can see....it has that same look top and bottom. What I am proposing is NOT a double sided hood...but just a single sided one. Double sided hoods are much more expensive as there is twice the CF involved in making it, and frankly, fairly rare to come across.

No custom hood possibilities....just OEM replica. Yes...it would bolt right up to the stock hinges.

I am moderately interested.

It would be a pretty long drive for me from D.C., but I'd be willing to do it. A couple questions:

1. Is weight savings the main advantage? If so, how much weight do you think you saved versus the stock hood?

2. Is it paintable? My TL is SSM. Even if it is paintable, I wonder how close the match would be with the rest of the car (similar to slight shading differences between painted sheet metal and plastic bumpers on the same car).

Thanks for doing this (or at least thinking about it).

Just a couple questions about the cf hood...

1) How will it be in rain? This is my daily driver and I dont want the cf hood to trap water in between. I think you know what Im talking about

2) how much would it cost?
3) How fast can you get it done? Im going to be entering my car into HIN Nightshift in July, so I would like to have it by then

I work in Libertyville, and I remember you saying that you dont live too far from there.... so I can pick it up

1. Rain isnt what usually causes what you are talking about...that is typically caused by somebody running it through an automatic car wash, which is not recommended. I have done it in my car....with no ill effects yet....but it is kinda like a crap shoot doing it.

2. $725

3. Two weeks.

I am most interested in knowing how much weight would I save as compared with using the stock hood.

Do you have any info on that?

Did you know how much weight you saved with your current CF hood?

Would this be made with the standards and strength in mind that you mentioned in the other thread (cf hood& trunk). And also, would there be a possibility of a CF trunk with the same weave if enough interest shows?

Is there no way you are going to ship this, or is that still on the fence?

Actually....the OEM skeleton is still below these hoods. It is a little lighter though.

Wait-a-minute Mike! ! I thought you were going to check on breathing new life into the engine covers??? You going with the hood man! That is like knocking half of the members off (because you know we NBP represent the majority )! I stopped as soon as I saw the engine covers, so are you going to do them or are you just going to do these hoods? Because I would drive in my car and pick up that cover from Maryland if you do!!

I second this motion. A guy at my job has a Black S4 with a Carbon Fiber rear deck lip and it looks awesome. I would love to get one of those on my 06 NBP.
