It’s a Wagon…… But if that’s what you are looking for cool. To me it’s looks like a car a middle class teenager would get for a birthday gift or something a retired couple would buy. If you go to the dark side go with an A6.

Just one look at that thing reminded me how happy I am with the styling of the TL.

Thanks for reminding me how glad I am I went with the TL.

Seriously, If you really like it then go for it. I'm the type that keeps a car forever so the TL is a "looker" but a car thats styling should hold up for a long time. I'm not so sure about the A3. That's kind of trendy looking but not too over the top.

Also consider "value". The TL is a great value for the dollars. I don't know all the details of what's inside the A3 but think of how will it compare. After all, you're inside the car looking out much more than you're outside looking in !

Reliability, cost for maintenance/parts, depreciation. Other than those things, I think Audis are great cars.

I have friends with different year models of A4's, and they are constantly having problems with them. 2 out of 3 of them said they had to replace all major parts after 60k - so if you're going to lease it where all of the maintenance is covered, then the decision is up to you. My neighbor has been a service manager at a wide variety of dealerships - from Dodge to Porshe - Audi being one of those, and he won't let me buy an Audi. Just my Good luck either way!

If it looked like some of their sedans I would have a harder time convincing you, but that thing looks pretty bad. I wish the TL had a DSG. BTW, I saw an A8L W12 the other day, those things are sweet. The TL looks a ton better and is more reliable.

A3 has 70 less HP

Powerseats not standard, and if you get the power seat option, only the driver's side seat is powered

HIDs are not standard

Sunroof is not standard

XM not standard (although you can choose XM or Sirius so that is cool)

Leather is not standard

But it is about 4K cheaper, when you add some of these features its the same as the TL. But again, you'll have a less powerful engine, not everything is power. Its still a cool looking car, I have yet to see one in person, A6s are where its at

I really don't think it's a car for people in their 30's. A4 avant or A6 would be more appropriate. If you REALLY like the A3, then you should at least wait til the quattro comes out. There's also a thread "TSX vs. A3" over at the TSX (duh) forum.

IMO, TL > A3.. and 6MT > DSG (gotta have that 3rd pedal!)

Don't go Audi/VW. For all the faults of the TL (Rattles, drooping headliners, CEL, vibrations, Turanzas)....the Audi is truly a POS. I had a lemon A4. My sisters Passat was constantly recalled and always stalling. I had another friend who went against my opinion, buy an Audi, only to come back to me a year later to help him choose a new car for him, as I became his new car guru.

If I were you and you really do like the A3...I'd wait on the BMW 1 Series to hit our shores shortly.

Don't like the looks of a wagon as they do not look one bit sporty to me. Plus Audi cars spells "MAJOR CAR PROBLEMS" Especially being the first Gen of A3 then I would double think about purchasing one.

But if you do buy just knock on wood that you won't come across any major problems in the first 2yrs of the vehicle.

Direct Shift Gearbox. shifts in 2/10ths of a second, faster then physically possible for a manual. Uses dual wer clutches, etc. Fastest shifting in the industry, another reason I wouldnt purchase it in the first model year, new tranny needs to be proven.

So you're considering going to a smaller, slower, less luxurious car?

Hmmm makes sense to me!

Subjective:

And MUCH uglier.

Actually no. The DSG is actually a manual transmission with a clutch that the driver does not have to press. All the driver has to do is shift. It is similar to BMW's SMG transmission, and the tranny that Toyota offers on the MR2 Spyder.

The DSG is the most advanced of these new trannies (although the new M5 SMG tranny is supposed to be better than the version it replaces).

Back on topic:

If you like it go for it. A bunch of opinions from strangers should not sway you. I would not. For the following reasons:
-Not a fan of Audi.
-TL has more features.
-Hate wagons.

However, liking a car is not always rational, so do what suits you and your lifestyle best.

^you are on the right track. There are two clutches, so the power is virtually never disconnected. It disconects one clutch with say gear 1 and applys the other clutch simultaniously which is in gear 2. Do basically clutch 1 has gears 1, 3, and 5, and clutch 2 has gears 2,4 and 6. The clutchers are also wet clutches, which means they submerged which keeps em better cooled and lubricated.

VW is now offering it on some cars too

The ONLY way I'd consider an A3 is if it had a sweet 6 cylinder with say 270+hp, all the goodies, is reliable, and cost no more than mid thirties. Oh wait, that would be a TL.

But hey - when you buy it - I'll race for pinks!

as well as a 15.3@93 with the DSG.

Then the audi forums are arguing that they are low 14 second cars.

Right! 200 hp and 3300 lbs.

The DSG is almost not worth it if you are only putting down that much power. It would be sweet in our car!

Audi won Le Mans with a DSG gear box, and it was previously an option on the TT. I'd say it's proven.

Thumbs up A3 Sweet

Disco beat me to it. DSG has been used for a few years in the TT. The A3 has a 9 year track record in other countries acording to the Audi salesman I chatted with so I would not consider it a year one.

The paint on these cars is flawless. I was looking at a purple one and was floored by how good the paintwork looked. The car is tiny compared to the TL since it is built on the TT platform. The appointments all feel refined and nice quality. My first impression was I WANT ONE the car is a jewel. Price is comparible to a TL when similarly equipped. It would appear they think a yourger crowd will be the target audience judging by the shocking bright red they offer it in. The TSX was offered in a similar red color in its first year here in Vancouver and they sold one or two so they dropped the color.

I did not like the trim on the Air ducts. It looks cheap and tacky but I think they use the same ducts on the TT. What's with the German car builders...don't they use self serve gas ? Fuel filler doors are on the wrong side of the car and that always creates havoc when there's a good deal at the filling station.

I love the TT, if you want to trade your TL for that... Still, the DSG has only been around a few years. The DSG is more complicated then any other part of the the car, along with most/all auto trannys, I would give it at least 5-10 years to consider it proven( I wasnt aware it had a 9 year track record). But if the the TL cost the same as a TT loaded, I would have to go with the TT. Since the TL is faster, more powerful, and nicer then the A3 I would never get or trade for that.

Thanx for all the opinions above!

PS: I saw a car accident on yesterday in Downtown: a G35 hit a parked A3 face to face,

A3 was totally fine, but G35 was seriously dmged, which got no front face anymore... lol!!!

I think you feel that way about the TT because you dont have one. My sister has the dsg 3.2 Quattro TT. It's a nice car, but I can't wait to get out of it if/when I drive it. It's quick, handles like it's on rails, but it's not comfortable in the least (IMO).

hmm I hear all kinds of comments here... like the new tranny needs to be proven etc.. but that does not stop people from buying acura. They still have to prove that their 5sp AT is bullet proof and they haven't. rattles etc...lol I know people want to think they got the lowest deal and best car. If the person like how the car handles, etc.. they should not be worried about what other people say that are not paying for it.

People are thinking the car saved their life or made their love life better... lol Buy what you want for the reasons you want. Acura is not the best at everything they do either...
