Can the new RDX ignition key work on a TL?

The new RDX key is sick!!!!! The old key fob on the TL is so outdated. Has anyone tried to hack this to make it work with our TL's?

Why don't you just wait for the 07 TL keyfob? It'll have a trunk release button and driver 1/2, unlike the RDX.

It looks good, like a slicker version of the Accord fob. It's about time (actually, smart access would have been even nicer, but I'll take it). I just hope it doesn't scratch up over a short period of time.

I just don't get it. It's a key fob. Why does it have to be so cool ? It gets banged around in your pocket with other crap and probably thrown in desk drawers.
Did I mess up by not "Z2-ing" my fob ? (Zaino reference)

Waterproof might be something more interesting given all the poor bastards I've seen jump into pools with their keys in their pockets.

That key looks like one of the ones the Accord uses. The key is lazer cut and not the same style as the current TL. Maybe the 07 TL will use the old style of key cutting?

the very last picture of the TL Type S gallery on acura.com looks like the key is of the same design as the RDX. If thats the case i'm sure it can be utilized on 04-06 TL's

it looks good. isnt the tl key fob water resistant (or proof to an extext)? When you open it up, you can see the rubber gasket/seal.

I dont know about 'cool' but having a compact allinone keyfob is definitely worth it to me. If they made the car keyless, I would never have to flip it out...

I remember reading on the old Accord key mod thread that because the Accord keys are laser cut, it isn't possible to use it in the current TL. That is why you still have to cut up a TL key and place it into the Accord FOB. Otherwise, creating a TL key from a blank Accord key would have made the mod simple.

That wouldn't work for me as I leave the key in the car and take only the fob with me. I figure if a theif can get into the locked car and get the key, they might as well take the car. After all it's insured.

Plus I like having the ignition key alone in the socket so that excess keys aren't banging around.

I would rather have a proximity device to unlock the doors and a push-button start.

Tell your insurance agent that, and you will be denied on your claim.

As far as the key goes, you would need to swap out the "switch blade" part to the old style. Without having it in front of me, I am not sure how hard that would be. The other option would be to change the key cylinder in the car to the new style. $$$$$$$$

I like the idea of it and will see if I can get a hold of one to play with.

This is something I don't know why car manufactures don't do. I've owned two GM cars, the last being a Corvette that would lock and unlock doors automatically. The Corvette actually had a motion sensor built in the key fob. With the keys out of the ignition, once the doors were closed they would lock after a determined amount of time (I had mine set for 30 seconds). If it sensed the key fob moving etc. the doors would unlock. Thus, it would lock as you walked away and unlock as you approached the vehicle.
If you inadvertantly locked the keys in the car all you did was shake the car a bit and the doors would unlock.

Having a push button start in conjunction with the above would be great.. You could just leave your keys/fob in your pocket, briefcase or purse for backup purposes only...

Better yet, maybe someday keys/fobs will be eliminated all together..

You should put a sign on your car that says "Key in ignition, if you can break in, its all yours"

Well I modded the Accord fob, so as long as the transmitters in the remotes are the same I will be getting one of these.........assuming I don't just get an S-type. Moda-way the originator over in the TSX forum says 2007 TL will have a driver 1/2 integrated key fob and I'm sure it will be laser cut like the RDX, so hopefully I can find a way to intergrate our cut key style in the fob. Problem being length of key in my opionion. The Accord laser cut key was shorter than our TL key, so I wonder if it will fold back into the fob correctly

I went to the dealership and they told me it's not possible to mod the RDX key for a TL unless we want to switch out the ignition. The TL key is cut on top and bottom and the RDX key is only cut on the top. I also asked if we would be able to addapt to the 2007 TL keyfob and he said he was not sure because he has not seen the key yet.

Read my post right before yours. Its just like with modding the Accord Key, it was laser cut just like the RDX key. You have to remove the lasercut blank, and replace it with a normal cut key blank.

The dealer is right, there is not way to make it happen, unless you mod it. I wouldn't waste my time or money trying it on the RDX remote, since it doesn't have Memory 1/2 or a trunk release. Wait for the 07 TL remote to come out, I'm sure someone will mod it asap.

By the way, how much is an ignition? It is expensive? I'm sure we could purchase an Accord ignition for cheap and relace the TL's.......but would that had the momory setting. Either way its like asking what going to happen on the way to work tomorrow, you won't know till it happens

Would "they" be the pro thieves that lurk everywhere or some kid who sees keys in the car and is tempted to break the window in to get it?

I work in insurance and I have never seen a clause for denial in any policy I have ever delt with. The only clause that might come close is the "duty to protect the property from further loss" clause, but if the doors are locked that could be considered "protection".

I have paid claims when they left the car running to warm up and someone stole it.

Just my

Either...

jdb8805 didn't actually say he left his key in the ignition, just in the car...

I myself gave him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't... Like you eluded to though, a key in the ignition would definitely tend to attract more than just "professional" joy riders.....

For some reason, I really wouldnt be suprised if he did leave it in the ignition... I also hope he knows that if the police recover his violated car, insurance will not cover it.

I think waiting for the 07 may be a good idea. It would at least give me the seat 1/2 option. But then again, I am the only driver of my car so I could just leave my old keyfob in the center console and when I unlocked the car it would recognize driver 1 every time...

So, I went to the dealer yesterday and bought one. 61 dollars. I like to tinker so I don't care about throwing 61 bucks in the trash if it doesn't work. I printed up the linking directions today and when I get home tonight from work I'll see if I can pair up the lock/unlock to my car. If it works, I will just toss my old keyfob in the center console. Then I'll look to see if the RDX has an immobilizer unit in it and if it can be programed or not. If it does, I'll see if it can be paired, if not I'll decide if it's worth my time to go much further. If that works, I'll get a key blank and see how hard it is to make one fit in the RDX unit. I have access to a full CNC shop so I bet I can make this whole thing work, with a modded immobilizer.

There are definietly a few roadblocks, but again, I like to waste time. I'll let you guys know what I find. For some people this is just retarded to waste time and money on this, but for others this is a cool mod. I'll keep you posted for those who wish to subscribe.

Good luck in the shop. I sent it to my dad who owns a Tool & Die shop specializing in Die parts for GM, and he couldn't get the laser cut blank to spec. You'll have to do what we did with the Accord key. Remove the laser cut blank from the fob and find some way to secure the standard cut key in that housing. The RDX key and fob together only cost $61!! Thats cheap..........

It would be cool if it worked, only because that means the transponder for the TL should be the same. Once completed it is more useless than the valet key

But good luck nontheless I would like to see the insides once you pop that puppy open. Please post some detailed pics of that soon!

Hopefully it works. I think Acura dropped the ball when they didn't update their key/remote for the 04 TL redesign.

I know when i converted my key to the accord one i was reading that one guy actually had the honda laser cut key blank shaved down so that i could be cut for the TL. Im not sure where he had it done but i know he did so i am assuming as long as this key isnt shorter then the TL key it could work

heres a thought, how about the new MDX FOB, it's most likely going to be a switchbalde key, and also it will have the contorls for the trunk (in mdx power tailgate) lastly, it will have the driver 1 and 2 controls.
