Can Honda Dealer perform recall work?

So yesterday I noticed some white smoke coming from my engine bay after driving, after checking where it was coming from and looking it up on Azine, I have pretty much pinpointed it to be the power steering hose which come to find out was recalled. The closest Acura dealer to me is nearly 100 miles away but in town there is a Honda dealer. I know Lexus allows their vehicles to be serviced at the local Toyota since the nearest Lexus is 100 miles away as well, so I was wondering if anyone has done this with Acura vehicles at a Honda dealership?

I called a couole of local Honda dealers who both said that they could do the work but not under warranty; as Honda dealers they cannot bill Acura for their costs.

And yes, recalls are considered warranty work.

Damnit and I was hoping to not have to drive to get this fixed, I wonder if the parts would cost me less than the drive . Kind of doubt it though.

I think it's only a hose and o-ring. Shouldn't be that much. I would say much cheaper than a 200 mile (round trip) drive. In many cases they'll allow you reimbursement if your car and repair met the recall criteria and you have proof of replacement and costs.

Its like a 3 hour job, including loosening motor mounts from below and jacking up the motor, etc.

At least, thats what I saw when I looked it up last year....forgive me if i'm wrong lol.

Mine had caused my power steering pump to leak as well and the service rep got acura to pay for a new pump. So I got a new pump and that hose all replaced for free.

Its worth the drive. just make an appointment and ask for a loaner car since they're so far away, then drive around/kill some time in the town the dealer is in?

200 miles roundtrip (hwy) is less than a tank of gas. Should cost you like 50 bucks...

Our Honda dealer does some warranty repairs because the closest Acura dealer is 4+ hours away any direction but its rare when they do.

Thats why there are not alot of Acuras around here. I do most of my recall work and repairs myself so the lack of dealer doesn't bother me. I can order most of the parts at Honda by cross reference.

Acura can (and sometimes does) allow exceptions. Call Corp Customer Care.

Explain that your PS Hose recall has not been done and is leaking and causing smoke. That the nearest Acura dealer is 100 miles away and you feel it's a safety hazard to drive that far with a leaking PS hose. Ask them to allow you to have the service done at the local Honda dealer. If they say, "No", ask if they will pay to have it towed to Acura.

Play up the safety issue. How scared you are to even drive it to the Honda dealer after seeing smoke, let alone 100 miles. You've read about how it can cause a fire, etc., etc. Just keep pushing the safety aspect. Don't yell or get upset or be a dick about. Just try to make them feel that your car is going to catch fire and it's going to be Customer Service reps fault. Guilt them to get 'em to say, "Yes."

Worst that can happen is they keep saying, "No."

OP, from my experience warranty/recall work can be done at Honda, but...

In my case, I moved to North Dakota. Nearest Acura dealer is a 16-hour round trip, but there is a local Honda dealer. Two things had to happen: the local Honda dealer had to agree to do the work and the dealer in Dallas that I purchased my TL from had to agree to the deal.

The Acura dealer ordered the parts and shipped them to Honda. Honda installed the parts, but I had to pay the labor charges up front to Honda and then my Acura dealer reimbursed me. That's the way it worked. I had 4-5 TSBs and the recall done this way and it worked out well. Yes, it was a bit of a pain to pay up front, but it sure beat multiple 16-hour drives...

Not sure if the above is standard procedure or not. Maybe they did the deal because of the distance to an Acura dealer, I don' t know. But Goodson Acura was great about working with me and Honda to make this happen.

Good luck!

I have done warranty work on 1 Acura at our dealer. The customer was from NJ...had vehicle shipped to IN along with the backordered alternator the dealer in NJ was waiting on. But like posted above, the customer fronted the labor cost up front (at the home dealers warranty labor rate...$10 higher than ours) we installed part and cust was reimbursed by home Acura dealer.

Basically, can Honda perform Acura warranty and submit for it...no way, ever. Its wrote like a cust pay order and taken care of that way if the dealers agree up front to play it that way.
