Buying a used 04... with one minor problem

Hey all,

I'm brand new around here, and I'm considering buying a used 2004 TL with Navi. The car only has 8000 miles on it, and it looks brand new!!! Except for this little booboo...

I love the car, but I'm wondering if anybody has any idea's how much it would cost to get something like this fixed. I would want to get the clear bra installed and I'm wondering if that is something that can be put on after something like this.

Other than this, the car has a few other minor scratches but overall it seems like a great buy.

Thanks in advance, and I love this forum!

Figure about $500 to get the bumper cover repaired and repainted, including labor. The price for repainting some colors is outrageous.

You can always check with a body shop, tell them it's a 2004TL with satin silver metallic (SSM) paint, and ask them for a ball park figure.

For just those scratches at a QUALIFIED body shop....I would expect prob around $350 or so? Make em knock off $750 - $1000 on your deal for the damage or tell em to fix it?

That little boo boo could be worse than you think... it looks like either he this someone or someone hit him on the corner... could be some damage under the bumper

Also, it look a little like it had already been repainted... could this be the second time it happened?

Good point....it does look a little suspect.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The lady I'm (potentially) buying it from said it was a shopping cart accident, but who knows. The carfax was clean, and she's asking 28,500, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

We could be misinterpreting the damage from our view in the pic...it could just be touch up paint they used after it happened and not underlying paint...meaning this would be the first.

I would say GO FOR IT!!!

I have the 2004 Satin Metallic Silver that i just purchased about a month ago. A co-worker accidently backed into the rear bumber

I took it immediately to a body shop and they did the following:

Removed the rear bumber
Sanded the bumper
New Paint job on the bumper ONLY

It costs $510.50

Now thereis just one thing that I found out. When the chick hit me...she enabled me to find out that the bumper had been painted before. From the pics you have posted, it looks as if that was a result of a bad paint job. if I were you I would find out if the car had been in any previous accidents. If it was nothing serious I STRONGLY encourage you to buy. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!

Well, I talked to the seller tonight, and I told her I wanted to buy the car! I'm going to take a much closer look tomorrow, but I'm sure it was just a minor thing. It really looks like it was fixed with touch-up paint.

I really appreciate everybody's input; have a happy new year!

Congratulations....

And I was not trying to talk you out of it... just say that it looked like there was some extra paint in the chips that was not the really bad touch up paint... but you can not tell with a picture.. either way, if there is not damage behind the bumper... it is only $500 or so... and it is a great car...

Did she say WHY she was getting rid of the car with only 8,000 miles?

350 for a repaint... I would stay away from the 04 since it was the model year. Why only 8000 miles

Well, she bought the car in California and hardly drove anywhere with it. Then she moved back to her hometown of Miami and had the car shipped out here. Basically she works out of her home and doesn't need to drive anywhere. But now she is moving up to NYC on Tuesday and has to sell the car, the bad news is I couldn't get her to lower her price as Carmax said they would give her 28,500 for it.

I've done some reading around on the forum and people seem to have little problem's with their '04s, but if there is a stupid problem I still have 25 months of warranty left so I should be in good shape.

So either way I'm happy, it seems like a great ride and should enjoy it for a number of years!

Everybody have a good new years? My head hurts...

If carmax would give her 28500, why is she bothering with a private sale? How much are YOU giving her? Not MORE, I hope.

Same price... so that would lead me to believe she probably could get around 27,500 or 28,000 at carmax. But that's just part of the game you play. Man buying cars is a PITA!

Not knowing her... I would think that she is telling the truth... I know people who see what they can get on the car and then will sell it for that to someone they know... it sets a price from an uninterested party...

And why screw around for a few extra bucks when she is leaving soon and needs to get it done...

But, it is a good car and seems like a good price.

Come on ya big wimp - buy the freaking car. Also, I'm about 99% sure that there's no damage under the bumper AND I'm sure the prior owner was just trying to touch up the paint to make it a little better on the eyes....if the car is right along with price, buy the freakin car before somebody else does ya moron....
