A buried message from BJ in another thread-"Real time traffic info in TL?"

BJ siad:

"Just found out that Acura is releasing the chip that will allow the TL to get realtime traffic reports just like the RL.....it's coming out on Monday morning at all Acura service locations across the US!

I'm going to camp out at Smithtown Acura on Long Island starting at 9pm Sunday night. Anyone want to come and be the very first to have a realtime traffic integrated TL?

BJ"

BJ: Could you tell us how you got this info?

Thanks.

Is this the thing that's supposed to display XM's real-time traffic info on the navi system?

I know BJ jokes a lot. But, he sounded like he was serious. I pulled this out of the keyfob trick thread.

He does sound serious, I can tell by the inflection in his voice. But no this is more of BJ's BS.

And after reading this thread, I'm sure BJ is happy.

Makes you wonder why BJ stuck it in the middle of the keyfob-to-the-chin thread.

First off, didn't mean to cause disruption.

Next, the reason for my reference to something ridiculous (realtime traffic in the TL before the RL is released) is because lots of people were fooled into thinking that 'head as antenna' thing was real just as many people were fooled by some guy in the Howard Forums who claimed to do a campout for the v710

Oh....and on a truthful note.....an Acura service manager that's also been a personal friend for many years did tell me that he's 90% sure that the TL will be able to use that PC slot in the DVD drive for the realtime traffic, but it's going to be a full year after the RL is on the road for marketing purposes.

Thanks for clarification. Everytime I open my trunk, I always wonder if I or someone else would do anything with the PC card slot.

Didn't your mother teach you not to yell FIRE in a crowded auditorium? Especially when it's holding a pyromaniacs convention.

Quick! Call 911! BJ's verrrry ill! Or, maybe he's been kidnapped by aliens, and been replaced by a really cheap clone.

The key fob-to-the-chin trick really does work, but I haven't ever figured out why. You should try it once when nobody's looking, maybe late at night in your driveway. No foolin'!

As an anal-retentive engineer, I do wonder why it works, though.

All the XM site has for premium is playboy. We know XM radio for traffic will be a premium service, so it is not yet available. Furthermore it will be out in major cities first, which will be a problem for us here in Boston. Imagine having up to date traffic info on your navi that doesn't even know half the roads anymore. More harm than good. Just wouldn't work. I look forward to the future integration though. BJ, keep us updated and u gotta let us know when u are kidding.

You're totally right about up-to-date traffic having a hard time working up here in Boston. I can just imagine the navi on my new TL starting to smoke when it tries to calculate directions in this city.

I think the day will come when not only is there real time traffic, but weather radar integrated with the nav screen (with an option to display or not display it). Not on the TL, obviously, but on future generations of Nav systems.

That would be cool as hell on long-distanced trips. I for one know I drove directly through 100 mph winds that were turning over 18 wheelers. I stopped after a while because I was tired, only to see dozens of overturned 18 wheelers on the highway I was on the next morning. Thank goodness for being sleepy..

Hi all,

I found this press release that doesn't say when this will be available, but at least gives some details as to what it will be like. Enjoy, ric

Forget that...
The NAV screen would be an interface for a fully operational computer tied wirelessly through the cellular network and you could control your household appliances from your car.

STANDARD on the 2006 TL. I saw it on the internet.

Don't see much use in this. And I suppose, if you never leave New York, you wouldn't see much value in getting real-time weather maps, either.

First off...I've been cruisin this forum for a bit, and though this is my first post out of the shadows..BJ appeals to my sense of humor....One of the reasons I come here each day to read info on the TL. I get his sense of humor and logic. I'm one of those who find themselves on the fence of being a future TL owner. I've owned BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln, and 2 C-5 vettes not to dishonorably mention the the other manufactors I've additionally owned. I'm considering a Lexus or the TL in my near future. Don't dis BJ....he does a service to those of us out here that are in the shadows. IMO he's right-on for my generational thinking....I get him. I' ve already been "FAST" and now looking for Lux, with a price tag below the new STS $63,000 I'll continue to lurk, looking for the right option...Thanks for a great forum WR

Welcome to the forum. We are glad to have you aboard and hope we can furnish the kind of information that will whet your appetite and make you long for a TL. We are NOT on commission.

We like BJ too, but as you have probably already noticed, it is sometimes hard to tell if he is serious or joking. I have asked him several times to put a "This is/is not a joke" statement at the beginning of every post, and X out the appropriate comment.

It took you a long time to make your first post after joining us; don't wait so long for the next one.

That's actually possible right now. With a telephone enabled home automation set-up (less than a grand) you can dial and operate anything in your house (using voice) via a blutooth phone in the 04 TL. Nav screen optional.

Well whaddya know. Lookee what I found. XM Radio offers a weather service as well:

http://www.xmradio.com/weather/

I bet it's not five years before you see this integrated with some manufacturer's NAV system.

But you heard it on the Internet, so it must not be true, right?

Nice find, expensive though. Lot of loot. Makes me wonder, do we know what the RL premium traffic will cost? I would lose all interest at this price.

Does anyone know what the PC Card Slot is used for in the 2004 TL right under the NAVI slot in the trunk? I was hoping it's to update the software for the real time traffic like the RL has.

That's what all the speculation is about. Is it there for simple diagnostics for Acura tech's? Is it for expansion of service to Real-Time Traffic reports like in the RL? Is it going to allow websurfing on the TL nav screen? Is it the Bluetooth port for the wireless iPod? Will it gang a second DVD drive for a 3D heads up nav display?

My vote is for 'all of the above'.

I doubt the slot is there to allow you to upgrade your car. The established upgrade path (buy a whole new car) is far more appealing to the car manufacturers.

True, but if Acura can glean $500 for the real-time traffic DVD/Chip install and get a kickback of 10% of the monthly subscription fee from XM then it's a relatively pain free way to get revenue out of 50,000+ tech savvy owners.

Teh real question is how much is the prmium XM service going to cost? The weather one is rediculously expensive and I assume this might be more.
