Brake slotted pin location

I've had brakes done a few times over the years before I started doing them myself this year. I believe the calipers are still OEM with the exception of one rear that was replaced at some point in the past. I am finding some conflicting information regarding where the slotted Pin A vs smooth Pin B need to go. With the calipers mounted on the vehicle (2005 TL automatic), the slotted pins on the back wheels are now on the top. On the front wheels seems like the smooth pins are on the top. If both boots move freely is the slotted pin placement so critical? If so what is the best way to figure out if it goes on the top or bottom when facing the wheel? Thanks!
