brake lights only work sometimes :(

so i get pulled over for not having brake lights and im totally confused b.c i know they have been working...i check them and all 3 are not working...i go home and check again and they are now working. last week someone told me that my brake lights were looking dim and not as bright as they should be. so for the rest of the day they have been working only when they want too. so im guessing this rules out broken bulbs and it might be an electrical problem. i have a service appt with acura on monday. any ideas? its an 04 with 74k miles

May just be the brake light switch. Mine was bad (throwing a code causing the VSA light to come on) and was replaced last week on my '04 with 50K miles.

My car did the exact same. They would be dim and maybe ever 4th or 5th time I hit the brakes they would be bright and full intensity almost rear ended because of it. It was the switch also.

so im guessing this is the switch right? the brake pedal position switch in this thread

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92622

so i would need to buy #6 and #8 in order to change out this piece? im going to order them from hondapartsunlimited.com...the 2 pieces are 26 bucks and it looks like i can change it myself to avoid the dealer trying to rape me

Dang I hope this doesn't start happening on my 05 TL.. Thats freaky cause there is no way you would know your tail lights aren't working (unless someone told you) And like CometVR4 said really increases the chances of getting rearended...

Do you have a VSA (!) error on the dash? If so, it is the VSA switch and you must be careful as you have no rear brakes.

Still having this issue in 2024 on a 08 Type S lol. Can someone confirm that the brake pedal position switch did the trick?

Are you just going to spam all of the old threads that laid out the first thing to try which is to replace the switch? Yes, I will confirm that replacing the brake pedal switch fixed my dim brake light issue. It is for sure the cheapest and easiest thing to try first.
