Brake change question

Hey guys, I was reading the service manual for my 06 TL 5AT and in the brake change procedure it does not mention anything about taking out and greasing up the caliper pins. Is this not necessary?

Thanks.

It is necessary. You might be able to get away with it in a nice climate that does not see a lot of rain and road salt but it's so easy, there's no reason not to. If the caliper can't slide, you're only braking with one pad and odds are it will get stuck on at some point. Just use the appropriate type of grease. On the flip side, you don't want a lot of dirt sticking in there so use the right amount and the right kind.

I bought some CRC synthetic brake and caliper grease, so i plan to use that. Is there a procedure for taking out those pins or do they just slide out easily?

Thanks.

I used a nail to pop them out. There are a few very good DIYs with photos in the Garage/Service Department...and yes, grease the pins. I also grease the spring clips on their contact points.

How do you use a nail to pop them out? I thought you just pull on them and they wiggle out slowly. I have looked at the DIY's, but I didn't really see any pictures/instructions on lubing up those pins.

Thanks.

They come out toward the center of the car. You can use a nail or punch to pop them out as in this picture from the DIY. If you have a punch, great. If not, a nail works just as well:

He's got the base 5at brakes, not the Brembos. The pins unscrew.

Yes, I have the non brembo 5AT calipers. As far as i understand, the pins on the brembo calipers serve to hold the pads in place, whereas on the 5AT non-brembo calipers, the pins are there for the caliper to slide on.

So i guess i will use an open ended wrench and try to unscrew the pins to apply the grease.

thanks.

Sorry, totally missed the AT part. If you're just replacing the pads on an AT (front), I'm not sure you really need to pull the pins. You are correct, the SM does not call for this.
