Boy am I bumming

I washed and waxed my new 2004 TL for the first time today. I used Meguiars car wash/paste wax for clearcoat finishes. Now three of my four door handles have yellow stains. I can not get them out and the guy at the local detail shop says take it back to the dealer. It's white diamond pearl so lucky me, I picked the only color that would show a stain like that. Any suggestions - is this a flaw in the paint?

wow...that almost sounds like you took the paint off. I think the plastic under the paint is in fact yellow.

I think it must have been a defect, so I'd take it back to the dealer.

Good luck

The dealers are probably going to say "You did it, we cant do anything about that." By yellow stain, do you mean the paint came off? Did you accidently chipped it. Run your fingers over it, can you feel where the stain meets the paint and is there some rough areas? I am fairly sure Meguiars would not take off paint so it is more likely that it was chipped. My suggestion is to blame everything on the dealers haha.

The paint where the yellow stains are feel as smooth as the rest of the paint on the door handle. Each door handle is stained in a different pattern - some on top, some on the bottom. I've washed and waxed my other cars at least 30-40 times and I never seen anything like what I see on the TL. I can't tell if the stain is in the clear coat or if it's actually stained the white diamond finish. Oh well, I'm off to the dealer tomorrow....

Maybe try some Mothers claybar/lube? that usually picks up surface contaminants - not sure about stains though

Okay so you didnt chip any paint...thats a plus. If it is stained as in discoloration of the paint, it COULD be the Meugiar wash but I highly doubt that. Try claybaring and see if it helps. It seems awfully weird that this would happen, but do try the dealers and see what they say.

Exactly which Meguiars wax number did you use?
Number 16 paste wax? in a blue round can
or the 26 High Tech Yellow wax? I know, it's liquid, but had to ask

Obviously, I love Nighthawk Black Pearl because I ordered it. It is amazing when all polished up. Take a look at my pictures by clicking on the link below and you will see what it looks like after a session with TLC and Zaino.

I really hope that answers your question but if not try PMing xpditor42. I posted the link to the thread where he posted this. It was a response to the quality of the paint on TLs. And I know that it is not the white car, but it does mention the orange discoloration

"Orange Peel" has absolutely nothing to do with orange coloration. The term refers to a less than perfectly smooth suface of the paint, sort of like on an orange. Most paint jobs have small bumps in them.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Would it be possible that you didn't take the wax off completely? Carnuba wax will leave yellow residue behind if you miss any spots. You can use a wax remover to help take it off. Meguires and Mothers makes them as part of their 3 step wax system. The wax/oxidation remover is usually step 1. Good luck and keep us informed.

Everyone - thanks for the suggestions. For the person asking what type of wax I used it was Meguiars Gold Class Clear Coat Paste Wax. It's in a black container. Yes, my bumper is plastic - I'm not sure if the handles are but my guess is that they are plastic. I noticed both bumpers are a shade off the rest of the car but it was like that when and I took delivery 15 days ago.
