Bodyshop guys are rip offs!!!

So i just purchased an CSL fiberglass spoiler. I stopped by 4 different body shops in NY (longisland). One guy said it will cost me $300 to bondo the spoiler sand it down, then paint it over. BTW i have 08 TL-S. $300 includes removing the stock type s lid spoiler and sealing the bolted holes. That price seems reasonable. Then the other three bodyshops telling me its going to cost me close to a $1000 because they have to repaint the entire trunk if i want to seal the holes upon removing the type s lid spoiler, which is $600. Then painting the csl spoiler would cost another $300. Accoring to the last 3 bodyshops, if they dont repaint it and seal it properly, the trunks going to get rusted and might leak water. The first guy is telling me to leave the stock type s spoiler because the csl spoiler might come off when using 3M tape to install the spoiler. Suggestions?

I think thats a little harsh lump every body shop together by saying they are rip offs. I mean they have to make money to cover their overhead also. I think the thing about body work that gets to most people is that the majority of it consists of labor and not parts. Also there is considerable differences between top notch work and work that is merely acceptable. Trust me there is a body shop willing to do the work at the cost you want it. But are they cutting corners?

what is a reasonable price jus to remove the stock type s lid spoiler, seal the holes, then get the csl spoiler painted and installed.

I say a decent price is $600 molded into the trunk, preped and painted...

labor 4 hours @ $100
material $200

The others are right that you need to properly seal the Bondo, but they don't need to repaint the entire trunk to seal the spots where they patch the holes from the lip spoiler.

What color is your TL, if it is a 3 stage paint, it will cost you.

2nd, 3M tape? Spoiler? You def. don't want that, on a nice hot summery day some poor schmuck behind you will have it as a grille.

its WDP. I've had M5 lip spoiler on my 2nd TL-S. I remember some schmuck tried to remove it. That's what i'm worried about. But the CSL spoiler does look good on my car. So 300 is a bargain basically.

WDP is a 3 stage paint..expensive as shit and hard to match... How do I know, I have WDP

So find a reputable shop, and they will not BS you, and you'll pay what the job deserves. Is the CL's spoiler new? needs to be stripped?

they have to bondo it first to make it smooth. Then paint it. Then i guess 300 dollars seem pretty reasonable. Thats the best quote i got so far. Others are asking for 1000 dollars because they have to seal the hole on the trunk after removing the type s lid spoiler. I'm better of getting a new trunk if im going to pay 1000 dollars.

If you spot 3 stage paint you're almost never going to match the rest of the panel. multiply that by 2 if it's WDP. This is the hardest color to match. You're gonna be better off painting the whole trunk after sealing the holes.

Even though $1000 seems a bit high. You have to consider that three different shops gave you the same price! Honesty I would take it to two more body shops and see what they say. If 3 out of the 4 body shops gave similar prices then maybe there is a reason for it. Moral of the story you dont want to take you car to a mickey mouse body shop and have them mess up your trunk. At the very least do a poor job. Good Luck

I've asked around and people are saying its not necessary to paint the entire trunk. As long as the trunks properly sealed, it should be good. Im not saying that they are rip off for charging me a grand. I'm calling them a rip off because they want to make more money off my ass by trying to convince me to paint the entire trunk when its not necessary. I even spoke to k1bspec the one who sold the csl spoiler. Even he said its not necessary to paint the entire trunk. Just seal the hole and 3M tape it.

Plus, the CSL spoiler is huge...it should cover where the lip spoiler's holes were. It won't matter what color they spot paint with. Patch the holes, spot paint with primer and base coat, attach CSL spoiler, bondo to trunk for a clean look, prime and paint WDP.

I can clearly see that most responding to this as a simple job do not deal with body shop or understand the process fully.

I've paid $1000 to repaint my bumper and fix a minor dent...This was done thru MY shop...3 coats...each designed to match the body paint perfectly, it is a hard task to do. The WDP paint is exclusively sold by Global Inc., the real paint, what lexus, acura, bmw and benz use... WDP is composed of oily pearl, which is a bitch to match.

Whatever you do, make sure they give it time to cure the paint, and make sure that you view the job in directly sun light from all angels.

$1000 is too much, $300 is too little...in between will be perfect, and you will have the right to claim to the body shop if you didn't like the outcome to redo... at $300 they will tell you f.off. I'm being honest.
