Thumbs down Blew my engine :(

Hey guys I had a quick question, not sure if anyone can answer this... On saturday night I blew my engine... I was driving around on the highway crusing for most of the night at some pretty high speeds with some of my buddies. I was going about 80 mph and I went to shift to fourth and I accidently shifted to second . I was told that the computer keeps track of this stuff and my question is will shifting to second going 80 void my warranty? Will they be able to see that I was cruising for a whille that night, and will that void my warranty? Im pretty upset about this and any input would be appreciated.

That sucks, but it's your fault. Own up to it and chalk up a lesson learned.

Oh yeah, they'll know what happened.

I dunno , but my quess is that they arent going to need to check anything like that to know what happen. Engines dont just blow up. LOL

You just hope that your dealership is nice and hooks you up. What year and how many miles on the car? You wont be seeing your car for about 2 months.

WOW man im really sorry I was freaking out when my clutch was burnt out after 7000 miles.

So you're sure it's the engine and not the transmission?

the Ol downshift into a taller gear and over rev the motor trick-
which causes valves- usually exhaust valves, to contact the top of the pistons.
On a good day- it only bent a few exhaust valves and nothing else
On a bad day it bent several valves, tweaked a camshaft- maybe dented a piston!!!
Did it go into LIMP mode afterwards- only revs to 2500 or so - allows you to limp to the dealer....
TYhe black box isnt that sophistacted- it will know max revs but not your night of play
The secret black box crash recorder on the other hand- remembers many things

After I downshifted the car just shut off ... wouldnt turn over at all, nothing. Im still really hoping my warranty will cover this ive only had the car for about 2-3 months

No way warranty covers this. Some Good Will if you're lucky.

Do you think it's ethical for you to F-Up the engine and then let all the other Acura buyers pay for it?

I thought the TL had a rev limiter? To prevent this?

yea, on a 5AT... with a 6MT, you are forcing the cars, whose engine is already running at X speed, into a lower gear....

Justin its your fault. Acura is not going to warranty this.

Im sure the computer logged that event. Either way I think its wrong for you to think they should foot this bill.

Just wait and let us know what they say and we'll take it from there.

Guys, easy on teh flaming.....(believe me, I had to refrain myself)

Yes and No. The 6mt does have a rev limiter to prevent you from over revving the motor in whatever gear, but it can't do any thing with a missed down shift. The owners manual even says it.

Accident or not its not acura's fault, its yours and they aren't liable to repair it as a warranty issue. Your only hope is that they look past it and good will it.

HOLY S--T Ive missed shifts before but not this bad. Ive done the second to fifth instead of third or the third instead of fifth from fourth but never when doing such a thing have I fully released the clutch and let the gear fully engage and never at 80 mph. That totally sucks sorry to hear that. Speaking of which does anyone know if that stills causes harm to the motor if i dont fully release the clutch on a mis-shift and catch before the gear fully engages? sorry not trying to hi-jack your thread. Hopefully Acura will cut you a deal and make you pay half or something reasonable, really feel bad for you man. Good luck!

Apparently Bearcat94 never has anything positive to say...You should go see what he stated on my thread.

Anyway sorry to hear about what happened with your car. Hope you can get it taken care of asap one way or another.

Damn...sorry to hear. But yeah with most auto makers will cover when its something that went wrong with the car itself. Seriously, sorry to hear and just keep us updated as to what the dealer says man. Again sorry to hear about what happened to you. I've had a lot of my Mazda buddies suffer the Curse of the Mazdaspeed.....

If you ~thought~ there was a rev limiter to protect you, you need to go back and read the owners manual again- you have some down time so......
This same thing happened to another member recently and it was about 2600

Accident lol - like anyone would intentionally do that!!! and at 80, as if acura would condone speeding
If only the TL had a shift gate like Ferrari does- but you will learn to feel the shifts now and practice correct pattern

Bummer - but a lesson to all MT owners

Acura will not cover the engine to get it fixed, but they may cover it in the future if you get the work done at a dealership. It seems that you may have damaged quite a bit if the motor shut off, it must have felt enough resistive forces to stop, just as if you hydrolock a car. A motor swap can take a day or to if you have all the parts and stuff, but if not, it can take a bit. I say go though insurance if you cannot come up with the money.

And of course, the reason acura will not cover it is becuase it is user caused damage, not acura's fault, such as for getting a dent. I hope that you have learned from the costly mistake.

Do not think that we are taunting you for this or yelling at you, we are trying to explain the truth.

I was talking about your last comment that no one is trying to really burn or flame him. I'm not trying to make him feel bad. Just read my comment.

hmmm thats an intersting slant- the insurance on the car may cover it... certainly worth asking about!

yes- OP sounds young -speeding at 80- and pulls the shifter sideways instead of down..someone needs driving school/track day before unleashed in the TL again

Was alcohol involved at all?

man just because he messed up ONCE for all you kno doesn't automatically make him an ignorant teenage driver! even tho he may be, thats not the point. There are thousands of guys who have done this before in their cars (who are not teenagers)! There are almost millions of people who go out and cruise around with their friends at nite! Most being adults! So why does that automatically make him a teenager? And besides, not all of us are bad drivers. As for the alcohol... if there was sum then jus ignore this whole thing.

The reason old people (such as myself) are always so hard on teenagers is because we've been through it. And believe me, when you're on the other side of it all, you'll look back and think "jesus, I was world class fucking idiot and I thought I was genius. How did I miss that?"

It'll happen to you too, just wait.

As far as Acura knowing, yes. The ecu will have an over-rev code and I think the RPMs it hit, which would be interesting to know. You're definitely boned though. Driving around like a maniac though, you probably got off easy just blowing the engine.

I'm sorry but I have ZERO sympathy for the OP, if you can't handle shifting your own gears you deserve to pay the price. It's not that friggin hard. Pay attention to what your doing!!!!!! If you can afford a 30K vehicle you can afford the mistake, or should have never purchased a 6MT. Grow the fuck up own up to your mistake and MAYBE if your lucky Acura will give you a little goodwill but they have no obligation so you better start sucking up to your dealer. Honeslty I'd be pissed if the dealer covers your fuck up because that gets reflected in the cost of new vehicles.

Ones writing style and attitude often come across as being from a member of the younger set- who often think everything is warranty and life is free, or its unfair
The older crowd takes real driving classes at the track where is ok to go fast and with pro race driver as your coach. Streets are dangerous places- especially for inexperienced drivers in a fast car such as the TL

How most of us survived our teens to 30s at all is a miracle!!-
maybe it was so we can pass on our experience,
BUT if you already know it all, AND can remember it all at one time~ then I stand corrected

waiiit up

so say acura doesn't cover this and he gotta shell out the cash for it, i'm going to assume he hasn't paid anything to acura at all yet due to the fact he's asking whether it'll be covered or not, but lets say the car gets back new engine and all, and you can't pay for it - will you have to sell the car back to acura or will they not release it back or what? --pretty much explain the whole "procedure" i guess

I'm sorry but I've got to chime in and say you guys are being just a bit hard on him. Especially all this nonsense about the extreme danger of going 80 on a highway. He may have been doing more than 80, there's no way to tell other than what he says, but the fact remains that ALL of you have gone at least 80 at some point. If you haven't, you're driving the wrong car.

ni$h21,

In that situation, you are basically screwed. If you "ruin" or "break" the car but cannot afford the repair, you are still, totally and completely, responsible for the payments. Period.

When you signed that financing/purchase/lease agreement there was no "out" for the loss of use due to your own error. If you default, they'll repo, report it to the credit agencies, etc.

Put another way - you pay for the car whether you can use it or not.

BTW - the car has a 50,000 plus mile warranty. You will most certainly have paid Acura thousands of dollars before the warranty runs out.
