Bad mpg
Bad mpg
I have an 07 tl and on the highway is fine i get 28-30 doing 75-80 but in the city no matter how easy i drive i get about 12-13 mpg for some reason ... does anyone know why perhaps this is? im only getting about 200 a tank with mostly city driving.

12-14 in the city? Yall must hit some terrible traffic or something. I don't think I've EVER gotten under 18mpg in the city; I usually get about 20-21. I just drove to MD last night and I got 30 mpg the whole way as well.
lol i do 75-80, but i never gotten 35 MPG..but ive never physically calculated the real MPG that i get per tank. the display from the Trip Computer has only displayed 20-21 MPG as the highest on long road trips. and 17 in the city after a full tank

I seriously doubt anyone is getting mid 30's for any extended period on the highway. The base 3G TL was rated 20/28 for the 5AT and 20/29 or 20/30 (I've seen both claimed) for the manual. If the car really did get mid 30's it would surely have been advertised. I once read a study on how wildly optimistic on board mileage indicators tend to be.
if you getting 12-13mpg you probably need to change your oil and do a ecu reset. It could also be poor tires. I drive 80+ on the tollway here and I still manage just over 300mpg a tank. Fully synthetic valvoline oil made a difference in my mpg
Uhm. Driving faster doesn't give you better gas mileage. So doing 75-80 won't give you higher MPGs. It would be lower cause the engine is working harder; therefore using more gas and lower MPGs.

The best in town mileage I have ever gotten was for a week of commuting to and from work during the summer months of the first year I had the car. I managed 27.98 MPG. This was with some moderately heavy traffic and through residential areas as well as a small city every day of that week. No highway driving. Stop signs and traffic lights as well.
The best highway mileage I ever got was in September '05 on the first leg of a vacation trip (about 260 miles) in moderately heavy but moving highway traffic with speeds running between 62 and 78 MPH. The A/C was running the entire time. My mileage for that leg was 33.94 MPG.
I never use the MID when doing a mileage check. I always do it manually and pay strict attention to fillup and even the angle of the pad next to the pump. These figures were calculated when the car still had the OEM EL42 toiuring tires mounted which, of course, do return better mileage than performance tires such as what is on the car now.
My average around town (spread out suburban and business areas with a small city close by) is around 25.4 in the winter and about 24.3 in the summer.
Fuel economy is not an important factor with me. It is low on my list of wants with a car. If my car does well in that area, so much the better. I consider the mileage my '04 TL gets to be more than acceptable. My other TL, an '05 automatic, does nearly as well.

My '08 TL gets 19-20 around town in suburban Chicago and 30-31 on long distance trips, with one spike to 34. Completely disregarding the on-board mileage info - the only way to be sure is dividing gallons filled by miles driven on the A or B meter.
its an 07 automatic fully stock with 44k on it. I just bought it a month ago and i do calculate by the actual mileage and gallons used in the tank not from the display. I run 93 octane in it too. It may need a tune up im thinking.
12-13 mpg city is way too low. Reset mid and get fresh numbers. Confirm this with a manual calculation using gals/miles. If both still show around 12-13 mpg, get the car checked.
Search on 'LacostaRacer MPG' and you will find a thread that shows a formula that is pretty accurate based on using only the MPH figure and predicting MPG. I bet you have a MPH value of < 20MPH and no tuneup will fix that problem- only a change in driving environment/habits will.
There are two things I have learned in the almost 5 years of ownership:
1. MID is very accurate
2. City mileage sucks because of all the idle time that happens. This is one reason many manufacturers are going to Start/Stop technology for cars- even Porche is doing this now.
I don't know why I have to say the same thing every single time these threads come up which is about once a week.
A dirty air filter can't cause a loss in mpg period.
The car does not need a tuneup at 40,000 miles.
Unless it got a seriously bad batch of gas from the bottom of the gas stations tank it does not need the injectors cleaned.
MPG is based entirely off of average MPH. When my average MPH gets down around 17mph which is normal with the way they have the redlights timed so terribly around here, I get 13mpg and there's nothing wrong with my car.
First and foremost you have to determine if there's a problem with the car. Post your average mph when the car reads 12-13mpg and go from there.

If you ever have a clear open road, take off as you would from a redlight and keep the throttle in the same place. I'll guarantee you'll end up over 100mph.
For those with crappy mileage and trying to understand why, do the following:
1. simply reset your MID on your typical commute and see what the average is on each leg of the trip. This will reflect both the MPG and the MPG and may open enlighten you.
What you should find is a avg MPG in the 9-15MPG when you're on city streets and stopping at lights and signs. Once you get on the freeway, the MID will rapidly move upwards into the 20MPG range in short order.
I buy my gas a mile from my work and always reset the MID for each tank so it's easy to see what happens with mileage the first few miles because the MID reflects things pretty well. My first mile will very greatly depending on how many lights I hit along the way. The best I get is 19MPG and the worst is about 8MPG so that makes my average about 13MPG like the OP claims. Fortunately the most of my commute is not like the first mile from Costco to the office and I get 18-19MPG most of the time with a 26MPH average speed.
I use to get 16-17 mpg going to the office because I chose the 101 beach route regularly that has a lot more lights than taking 5 for a few miles instead. Now I take 5 for about 4 miles and spare the beach route and get 2MPG better and this is even with a spirited 0-80mph romp on the on ramp on most mornings.
