Lightbulb Awesome idea, but need a random material :)

So I have an idea I think some of you are going to like. I know I will. And I've got the first half of the project done and ready to go, I think.

The problem I am coming to is finding the type of material I need. It needs to have some specific qualities. In short I need a type of rubber or silicone. I don't know, even like a neoprene or something.

It needs to be:
  • stretchable (to a point) yet retain it's shape
  • mold-able
  • resistant to temperature
  • somewhat soft
  • workable at home (this is just a plus)
You know, like a silicone oven mit material. Is there anything out there that can be like that yet stretchable and even better be like a two part mix?

Please, give me some ideas! This is out of my range! Lol

^That is exactly what I am going to use. Thanks for looking out. I found that site yesterday. However, I've come to a problem. I need to enlarge my casting and don't really know how. I'm new to molding... I need it to be 1/8 maybe 1/4 inch bigger.

What's funny is the material I want as my actual cast is what is being used to create the molds. I figure I will buy and try the silicone rubber and polyurethane rubber trial size kits and see what I like best.

Will do tomorrow morning.

Guys I'll explain later but I probably need to see what I have to do to be a vendor around here before I start opening my mouth.

Good things to come.

Well guys I will spill the beans once I hear back from the proper moderator.

This started as a really simple idea and now I've got 3 different projects going on for the same thing. The third being much more difficult then the first two.

Hopefully I get approval to make this a feeler thread and can get some community input before I start molding.

Dash cover? You need to figure out how to not disrupt the passenger airbag deployment.

No not a dash cover. This is a little more of a "hands on" type product.

Why don't you just post your project details. You're not selling anything yet.

Hey the rules specifically say what to do for this type of thread. So I'll just wait. Sorry guys sometimes I actually prefer to play by the rules.

But not often.

Since you asked Robb- I will let him chime in. Usually, I think feeler threads are ok as long as there are no prices posted and no sales taking place.

Yea I won't post any prices. Christ, I haven't even made the damn things yet. But if all goes well I will want to. That's why I wanted to play by the rules.

I was going to do this for just me but now that I see how easy casting is... It shouldn't be hard for me to make some batches.

Nothing real special I just think some of us would enjoy it.

^Well kind of but not really. But I'll proceed anyways as I'm not selling anything. Let me write something that looks decent up, make dinner, then I'll be back.

But buffbaker had it, shift knob covers. Specifically the maven models for now. Idea 2 is actually a new knob with a little something special. Idea 3 is a new knob with something I've never seen anywhere before. And who knows, the idea may be great but it'd be worthless performance wise, we'll see.

I'm wondering if all the intriguing build-up doesn't live up to the actual product...lol. I'm subscribed!
