AWD on future TL

Since i can't find any threads relating to 'AWD' in the database (it says that none are found), I thought that I would ask, has anybody heard of when this may be available in the TL? I have a 6MT, and lack of AWD is my biggest gripe about the car. There is just so much power to the front wheels that I have to be careful when pulling out from stop signs that I don't spin the wheels (which is a problem if there is traffic coming). Part of the problem is the tires (LS-Zs in Pittsburgh winters are not the best rubber for the occasion), but I would like to have road stickability and surefootedness without having to go to HP tires in the summer, and winter tires in November. I have considered going to a used A6, but the reliability is that car's Achilles heel. Has anybody heard anything?

Thanks in advance.

I'm in complete agreement with your gripe about AWD and I also spin my tires...I think it's jut too much HP to have on a FWD car. This is my first car that is not AWD and so far this winter I've had such issues with the handling (partially to do with the tires), but these are issues I never had in my prior cars.

As for the TL and AWD I think I read that it's probably at least 2 maybe 3 years away...I could be wrong.

As for a used A6, I used to have an A4 1.8t...loved it handling wise, but after a couple of years I was having issues with the turbo (I chipped it, so I'm not sure if this had something to do with it). So I think handling wise it will be great, but I'd be sure to do my research if you're looking at the 2.7T...maybe consider the 3.0 instead or the 2.8 depending on how used a car you want.

according to vtec.net model matrix the 06 TL should have SH-AWD.

Unfortunately, no room in my garage or driveway for another vehicle. Also, it would be cheaper to buy top of the line snow tires than to get a beater, with insurance, etc. I think that I may be in luck, if they come out with the AWD in the fall (06 model). At least I will wait until then, if the AWD is coming out then I'll probably upgrade, if not then I will just go with some performance snow tires. I hope that the acceleration doesn't change too much, I like having that power at my fingertips. If I could only control it!

I hope they don't offer AWD unless it's an option. I would hate to lose the power driving the extra components and weight. Let's face it.. the TL is not all that powerful anyway. I would love to have a larger engine (another 24 cubic inches) to result in (especially) more torque. 238 lb/ft is not exactly Godzilla the Torque Monster.

It's bound to happen and when it does, I'm sure Acura will do it right.

I have a TL with blizzaks on it and it does better than a G35 x with stock tires. But then the stock tires are not worth crap in snow.

A wheel/tire package will cost you about 1000 bucks from tirerack.
As I have said in the past the only problem is after the road are clear in the winter, you cannot push the blizzaks too hard since they are not meant for the same kind of driving.

You cannot search on terms 3 characters or less. Gotta put in 4. Never did like that... Can't search on ABS or VSA or ECU... Haha.

God, I hope you are right. My TL-S goes back in May '05 off the lease, just in time to buy a '06 TL AWD!

Damn, this topic has been beat to death. Yeah, SH-AWD is "probably" coming to the TL. No, we don't know when. And, yes, it is a good thing.

I doubtb that AWD will be offered it would steal a ton of sales from the RL. When you get down to the nitty gritty that is essentially the only one up the RL has on the TL. The RL has about the same space, it is slightly (very) more luxurios, has a softer less capable handling is noticeably slower and costs 15 grand more than the TL. If honda gave the TL SHAWD they would kill the RL period.

Hey, I have a stupid question. Not being in the know nor caring for AWD, I have to ask.. what does the "SH" in SH-AWD refer to?

Acura cannot compete within it's own nameplate alone, they have to compete against the rest of the car world. If Infiniti knew how to make a decent interior I would be driving a G35x. And they aren't the only one with an AWD sedan now and every year more and more manufacturers will be offering them.

That's not to say the '06 TL will have AWD. But the TL ( or another $35K sedan ) will have it within the next few years. Personally I don't think the TL will have it until the next major (4G) redesign.

If it transforms the car like the porky RL, not interested. See current Motor Trend how the RL faces the new M35. Despite more power, a lot slower and less quick in the 30s circuit they ested.

Question It's hard to make a decision of "when"... but... TL would have it...

TL series need some bothers/sisters into their lineup. Just like CL in addition to TL in the past.

IMO, if we assume RL vs TL SH-AWD is 48k vs 38k, will Acura like to keep its sale records (3k vs 7k)? or Acura likes to have (2k vs 9k)?

IMHO, TL SH-AWD is definitely going to boost TL's sale records. And, the $$$ Acura earns by TLs would definitely cover their loss by losing RL's customers...

Btw, "... We’re not necessarily (adding AWD) for (the luxury factor). It’s more to satisfy what our customers are looking for,” says Watts. However, he acknowledges that TL’s competitors: the BMW 3-Series, Infiniti G35 and Lexus GS, have AWD, and the Lexus IS entry-level models soon will have it..."

I'd be pretty surprised myself if Acura made an AWD TL with the current gen. I'd be even more surprised if they sold it alongside a FWD model. Besides some minivans and smallish SUVs that offer both drivetrains, I don't know of a lot of cars that do this. I would guess that the reason is that FWD is typically more than enough for most winter driving, and most people don't want the extra cost/weight/etc that AWD incurs. RWD cars will typically offer an AWD option because lots of people fear driving RWD in the winter.

"An Acura executive told Ward’s last fall Acura likely would expand all-wheel-drive to include models in addition to the RL flagship, with the TL being the next likely candidate."
