AV6 2007 Accord Trans on 2005 Acura TL

Hi guys,

My trans is on its way out on my 2005 Acura TL
I know how bad the automatic Acura TL transmissions are so i went out and started researching the best option.
After doing heavy research on this forum and others, I learned that an AV6 2006-2007 Accord Trans Non-Hybrid is the best choice
and it will fit the Acura TL.

The AV6 swap involves swapping in a transmission from an Accord V6. This transmission has the exact same gear ratios as the TL Type-S and is virtually a direct bolt on replacement, with some parts that need to be swapped.

In general, Honda 3-shaft 5 speed transmissions are interchangeable. Since Honda made some changes that greatly improved the reliability after 2005, what most people are doing is replacing their 2nd gen TL transmission with a unit sourced from a 2006 or 2007 Honda Accord V6 (non-hybrid).

Most of the information that i've found is basically for 2nd Gen Acura TL's
There's not too much detailed info for a Accord AV6 trans swap on 3rd Gen TL (although some had said that it will work)

This saturday, I will be swapping a 2007 Accord V6 Automatic transmission w/ 91,000 Miles in a 2005 Acura TL (Automatic)
If anyone has done this before on a 2005 Acura TL or has any knowledge of what i should look out for, PLEASE COMMENT!
Some say yes it will work and some say no it wont fully function, if you've done this and its been working for you i'd like to hear from you.

Straight swap but you need to use the TL position range switch

There have been multiple threads talking about this in the past month or two. Pretty sure in those threads there are links to the bigger thread that has all of the AV6 transmission swap details in it.

Using Google: site:acurazine.com/forums/third av6 transmission

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g.../#post13952475

MODS: Can we find or create something in the garage about this? Seems to be coming up in the forums more often and searching for a conclusive answer isn't exactly the easiest. The majority of us who have been around for a while know it off the top of our heads, but someone new will not easily stumble across the correct threads.

I am planning on doing this also. Was it a straightforward swap? My 05 TL transmission is not taking high or reverse.

I used 2007 Accord V6 5sp auto with the sticker on the front with the BAYA label and put it in a 2006 Acura TL. I used the converter that was with the AV6. Now, my TL did have this metal shim on the converter and I did move it over, and of course I replaced the o-ring on it as well.
My other notes:
If you are going to replace the rear main seal, you’ll need to either get the special seal driver (recommended in the FSM), remove the rear block plate, or go to the hardware store and make a one time use seal driver. Not a single seal driver set you can rent at the part stores has one big enough.
The harness and sensor (position range switch). I changed the harness. So far the sensor hasn’t been an issue and the connectors on both ends look the same, but I figured better safe then sorry.
I did replace the axle seals just to be safe.
Everything alse bolts up.

I have now driven the car with the AV6 for almost 10k miles. It has given me no problems and drives great.

Heres my question, will this swap work on a base 08 tl? My trans is about to poop out at 191xxx, been a good run but it’s time for replacement. I want to do the swap but no one has specifically specified if it works on 07-08

No, it will not work; your 2008 TL has a different bolt pattern than the 2006 Accord V6. That said transmissions from other 2007 and 2008 TLs will work perfectly well and are easily as good as the AV6 transmissions.

Are you sure it's your transmission ? Have you already done the fluid changes and pressure switch replacement (great DIY in our garage for this). The 07-08 TL's have a much more robust transmission and we haven't heard many instances of those dying.

I know that you could use from from a 2009 Honda Accord to a 2005 Acura TL

No, this will definitely NOT work, the 2009 Accord uses a completely different mount pattern between the engine and transmission.

Expanding on the above - only a 2006 or 2007 automatic transmission from a V6 accord will work. No hybrid, no 4 cyl trans, and no other years. The trans serial code on the sticker should be visible on the top or the front of the trans. There is also an actual plate on the front of the trans with the VIN as well, you want to make sure that this plate is A) still there and B) matches up with a v6 accord from 06 or 07. Sometime a rebuilt trans will have this removed, and you think you're buying a "baya" trans, when in reality the trans was originally from an 04 or something.
