Anyone transplant a RL Driveline in TL
Hey any of you acura gear heads out there every try to transplant a 3G RL driveline into a 3G TL? I have always imagined that somewhere there must be a RL with a Salvage Title and a willing 2007 TLS to take the SH-AWD driveline!

To be perfectly honest this exact idea has been on my mind for quite some time now. To transplant SH-AWD into my car. I wonder how much would be involved in something like that. I think it would be worth it cause the FWD is the only thing holding me back from SC'ing my car cause I just feel that I already have too much power for FWD. Supercharging it would just be ridiculous.

The wheelbase on the RL is 110.2"
The wheelbase on the TL-S is 107.9"
That means right away, there's already going to be a custom driveshaft needed... who knows what else will need to be changed out, extended, cut, etc.
Sounds possible, but would take some mechanical knowledge, machine shop work, and some free time!

Isn't the SH-AWD what makes the RL heavy? Given that, adding SH-AWD to the TL would make it just as heavy and be a pain. I think it makes more sense to swap a 6MT into the RL.

Ummm, well, if you read my posts, I am not. Dont think it would be feasable or cost efficient. That's why I said, wait for the 4G TL with the SH-AWD and possibly (most likely) a 6MT.

FWIW - If I can keep my TL without sending it packing for some odd reason and depending upon what's new on the TL in the coming years... I'm thinking on a complete repower, re-tranny and re-rearend. Much easier to use the TL "shell" and start from the ground up with the driveline from something completely different rather than hoping things would "line up" using a sibling vehicle... There would definitely be a whole bunch of fabrication needed and a guy would need to pretty much scrap his ride doing so, but I think the TL would be silly fun with say a GTO or Mustang driveline in it.

Sad to say, but you need to look a lot further down the list to find an Acura/Honda product.
Sooooo, it may actually be an "improvement?"

Honda/Acura build their cars well...
They build FWD cars well... The TL-S is a perfect example. The car screams, kills many RWD competitors on the track, and has VERY impressive skidpad numbers.
AWD is NOT everything, and I'm not sure I would like it as much if it had AWD. More weight, more robbed horsepower, and worse gas mileage. All for what, a better launch? I for one enjoy still getting 30+MPG in a near 300hp car...
The lack of low end torque, but improved top end with a Vtec engine REALLY suites a FWD set-up. With AWD, you wouldn't have that much benifit, unless you're in the rain of couse, or going WOT around corners.
Unless the car gets an additional 50hp as well, AWD will be completely useless. I hope they don't do that...

My old 98 Audi A4 was AWD Quattro 2.8 260-280 miles to the full tank
my friends 98 fwd A4 300-350 to full tank average
awd = heavy,less millage
but fun to drive track days even more so

I'm big into sleds... And most dudes that are big into sleds are not like me when it comes to Global Vehicle Manufacturing.
But I try and educate them all anyway.

That would cost more money because you would be dealing with ALL custom parts, instead of just adapting an existing drivetrain to a similar vehicle.
Imagine how difficult it would be to turn the engine 90*, mount a custom transmission (adaptors, custom flywheel & clutch system). And you'll probably still have to use the RL rear end anyways.

if anyone could fit an RL driveline to a TL, it would be the ultimate MOD. Honda reliability built in! Only major thing needed is probably a shorter central carbon fiber driveshaft for the TL!

Three Wheelin'
please don't flame me on this... could the driveshaft have a segment cut off the have it reattached? i mean like a peice off the end, then reattach to the differential...

Other issues besides the wheelbase mismatch...
Room for the transfer case and the rear differential. Not sure if there would be enough room for that under the TL.
Modifications to the exhaust. I attached a link to a video that was done that showcases the underbody of the RL. It's pretty impressive.
As far as the RL being heavy, yes it is, but the SH-AWD really minimizes that when you begin to toss it around. It really handles well. You guys should wander over to the RL forum. LOt's of TL to RL converts there who have really fallen in love with this car.
Again, check out the video.

This one is a little better quality, but you need to copy and paste in in the address bar.
