Any scratches on tint

So I decided to get a tint but I'm not sure on getting the felt or moleskin installed too. I was thinking of just getting a tint cuz the extra felt is another 80 bucks! Are there any people here that got there tint but didn't get the felt installed and got there tint scratched. What are the chances of it getting scratched?

wow. that's kinda steep. Shop around man.

I had mine done for $290 for all except windshield AND moleskin. Tint came out perfect including the small windows in the back.

Yea definitely get the moleskin! I had my tints and within the first month the tints were unbearably scratched. I got the moleskin and it fixed everything.

You can go onto ebay and get moleskin for around $25 max. Then install it yourself because its not hard at all.

IMHO, virtually 100% guaranteed they scratch without moleskin.

Trying to save $40, I only had the front done with moleskin. 1st time the back window goes down - scratches. Both are unbearably scratched ~5 weeks after installation.

Now I gotta go back and pay to have it fixed. It's gonna cost more than $40.

I've never heard of moleskins before. Doesn't mean it's not necessary, but I've had window tint on all my cars and have never had scratches. Are these scratches TL specific?

Yea, I know people with Pathfinders, Maximas, 335i, Accords, and other cars that are just fine. This is the first time I saw this problem.

Yes. Most cars have a strip of felt associated with the window weather stripping. The TL doesn't. Just a firm plastic strip.

If any dust or debris catches between the plastic strip and the tint - SCRATCH. In "regular" cars the felt catches the dust/debris before it gets trapped between the weather strip and the window.

IOW - most cars don't need moleskin/felt, because it comes already installed.

That is pretty steep. My tint with moleskin was $160. I definitely recommend the moleskin, but there are some members that claim that their tint is fine without it. You always have the option to buy it and install it yourself.

All of this has been discussed before. Please check out the The 3G Garage and/or perform a search for moleskin or felt.

I agree with everyone on getting moleskins. while my moleskins were being delivered, i thought it'd crack the window open a bit...bad idea. got a two small scratches on the tint.

i recently got tint as well. i did NOT get the moleskin. my guy said if it scratches he would fix it for free and put in the moleskin. he also said because the fact that i keep my car soo clean, chances are less likley. he said dirty interiors will scratch more)
( i awlays keep one of those swifer auto dusters and a magic eraser in my car. i dislike dust &marks)

i also dont roll my windows down too much. no one really sits in my car , so just the driver side gets down for tolls & maybe drive thru!!

Just got my tints done for $130 plus $40 ($10 per door to pull the door panels and install the moleskin) plus $5.95 for the moleskin on-line (I don't think I should say where). Why risk not putting on the moleskin and then get scratches and have to get the tint re-done even if it's free? TLs are known for this problem.

I have had mine for a year without moleskin, I have no scratches. i think that it is in some ways a false sense of security. It will trap dirt and grit as well. The key is to have quality tint film and to keep your car interior clean.

It depends on how well you keep your car clean. More specifically, the window gaskets.

slightly anal: use the shop vac to clean the gasket wells

compulsive: dismantle the doors and clean the blades with your favorite non alcoholic (dries rubber out) cleaning product.

It may scratch, it might not. It's too much of a risk if you ask me - $30 for moleskin is well worth it to ensure a $150 tint job doesn't need to be redone. Better safe than sorry.

Yeh. Weigh what your time is worth vs. the time/effort to get it redone, even if for free.

I didn't have moleskin installed when I tinted my car back in march....If only I knew about this site be I purchased my TL. needless to say, I'll be getting moleskin installed and then either this winter or next spring I will get a complete re-tint done.

Just got back from the tint shop, same one the local Acura dealer uses. While I was waiting, someone bring a new 07 TL in with scratches. Turns out the poor guy had it tinted thru the dealer and they (the dealer) opted not to have moleskins installed. Here's hoping my moleskin self-install does the job

When I had mine tinted, it was supposed to have moleskin installed. Four months later it was scratched pretty bad. After I found out that the guy who tinted it went out of business, I took it apart and found he didn't use any. I have since put moleskin on the rears ( they were scratched the worst ) but haven't gotten around to doing the fronts yet.
