I have an 8500 x50 and its actually my 3rd one because they have fallen off the window so many times they always broke/malfunctioned. (Thank god my navi screen never got cracked or anything crazy.)

Anyway so I am giving up on the suction cup crap.

I live in FL and it gets HOT of course and these things only last a week or two tops before the suction cups give on me.

Anyway so I been looking online for over an hour and I find a few posts about mirror mounts but none that can confirm it will fit a TL... Further the only two I can find are $80 for one and $65 for another.

Thats just nuts...

Anyone with a TL got any shots or ideas of how best to mount this bad boy? I like the mirror mount idea but dont really have the time to make my own mount and even if I wanted to pay the CRAZY price for one of the mounts I found I dont know if they will actually fit right on the TL.


And yea I know, just dont speed. Well I actually have not in the past year but I own the darn radar and want to use it, lol.

there's a DIY to hard wire mount it up there, but i dont remember what the member used to hook it to the mirror. try searching for it

I glued my mount to the windshield and used an invisicord- this works great and is very stealth and convenient as well. The mirror mounts tend to vibrate.

 

tie a string to the radar to the mirror so it doesn't fall :p

 

Mine suction cupped and never falls.. Maybe invest in stronger suction cups to get extra sucking power. The cups that come with the SunPass are pretty dam strong. BTW I'm in Miami.

 

Yea I have searched up and down this forum, and found a few from a few years back but most had non-working pictures or not enough info for me to try it.

I have had my radar hardwired though from day one.

I was actually thinking of this, but was thinking of glue or some type of clear glue on the suction cups, haha... I wouldnt put glue up on the little black dots though because that means cant use a razor to remove glue if need to ever as it would take them off too..

Thats kind of what I use the hardwire for, it trys to catch the radar now as I tied it around the mirror, haha

I have tried 3 dirrerent cups. Some do hold a little better and longer but in the end they have all fallen.

The passport is a bit heavy, I dont have problems with my E-Pass, it seems to stay.

Do you park outside 24/7? Mines always outside though and its the fact it gets hot, than cool, hot than cool that is killing them. That and these bumpy ass shitty roads they have all tore up dont help lol


Anyway if anyone know any of those mirror mounts that actually work, I like that idea better than glue on my windshield but I think that day is getting closer. Dont really like the idea though of the radar clip being metal touching the window. I already hate the radar detector has to rest on it to hold up and it just bounces up and down with my speakers and the roads.

This one looked pretty good as well and it only $40 plus ship. You just have to measure the stem on the mirror. Plus! If you are ever bored one day you could always trace the acura/TL logo on the black plate and dremel out the design. Link:

Or you could go out and buy that real heavy duty 3M Velcro and slap that on the end of the bracket and just stick it on the windshield

 

I mounted my 8500 on my '08 MDX with industrial adhesive backed velcro. One piece stuck to the dash (taupe interior with gray velcro...looks good), and the other piece stuck to the bottom of the Escort. Works fine ... no difference between that and windshield suction cup mounting in terms of sensitivity/range, etc. that I can tell. Also very easy to remove when driving in Virginia

 

I bought a CountryJoy mount in hopes that it would work on the TL mirror but it was too thick- works fine on our Pilot but the detector vibrates so much that it annoys everybody. By far the best solution, I have is the direct glueing of an extra mount bracket (less suctions) onto the window itself.

I also did the Velcro on the dash solution on my previous Maxima and this worked OK, but the tape would come off in hot weather when I tried to take the detector off the dash (for theft deterrent reasons mostly). The velcro also left a mark on the dash after removal when I sold the car- the buyer didn't notice so it was no big deal.

Down low to either side will have a negative impact on its sensitivity in a few ways.

#1 The sensor that points to the back has just become useless. (Even if you have tint, which hurts the backwords range a lot, its still better to have a little something than nothing.)

#2 The front range depending on if you have in the center or not can be hurt. IF its to far to the left or the right it does not get to have a good full view left and right. Its also said to have bad impact on it if its sitting that low on the dash. To get a good sense it needs to be a good 6 inches or so up.

This allows it to be in the open more and catch more signals.

I think the main hurt though is loosing the back sensor because your to low.

I have dark tint so I am sure I cut my sensor in half already but being its dark at night I cant tell if a cop is behind me until hes on me already so by nature I watch my speed if it even peeps for a second because I know the back signal is going to be bad which means they are very very close....



As for the blendmount its kind of like the others.... Who knows if it will go on the mirror well unless someone trys it. Has anyone used this on a TL yet? Oh... And this one of the $80 ones I was talking about... lol

Someone needs to just make one custom I am sure we could get a good deal of people to buy them for around $30-$40 and know it will work Anyone with skillz?

I had the same problem with my escort 9500ix. The suction cups come unstuck in cold or hot weather. I gave up on the suction cups and made my own mount.

I used a piece of aluminum strip 1 1/" wide, 2 1/2" long, 1/4" thick. You can buy strips of aluminum at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. I screwed the suction cup mount to the aluminum strip with metal screws and then filed them down flush. I then used 3M Dual Lock Velcro, applying to the aluminum strip and another strip to the windshield where I wanted the radar detector. The Dual Lock is the only thing that does not come unglued in the heat. This is the same stuff as used to stick on I-Passes. The 3M Dual lock can be purchased at http://www.itapestore.com/index.asp?...n=Custom&ID=23. This is the best radar mount I have ever had and does not come loose in the heat.

Hey when you switch the mirror to 07-08 they are direct swap and everything will work the same include the turn signal or you did some mods.....thanks..

this isnt a direct firt but it still works pretty good. i got the smallest one and it is still too big(in that it doesnt clamp tight around the mirror) so i just added some rubber tubing between the mount and the mirror stem in order to increase the stem's diameter. not super cheap but it works good for me.

 

The higher, the better we all know that.. having a radar displayed like that below the mirror in the window in NYC will guarantee a broken a window and a missing radar...

How stiff is it though, does it move around easy with respect to bad roads or loud music?

Some people said these type of mounts depending who's you get cause a lot of movement noice like rattles and vibrations ect...


I live in the worst part of Orlando, FL so I know what you mean...

But that being said I don't think this is a big deal, just take it down. Even if you put in glove box they wont know really what was on that, and even if they did they wont know if its in the car.

I use to take my suction cup one down at night because so many break-in's around here but that started to make the suction cups fall faster.

As of now I have not had my radar in for about 4+ months and its just upsetting because I got it exchanged the last time so this one is almost brand new and I still cant use it. I miss having it, lol

 

^ it has the potential to be stiff as long as you add enough rubber tube or whatever to fill in the space between the mount and the post. also, the post is more of a ball shape so it doesnt fit as good as it would if it were a straight post, but its not hard to make it tight. if you use this one i say try to plan to only install it once because the little hex screws on top are small and long and a pain to get to. and your arms are up for a long time so it gets uncomfortable.

the music and bumps do make it jiggle some, but its more of the connection between the detector and the plastic piece that slides in to the detector than it is the fault of the mirror mount. i really like and would buy again.

i also dont worry about the broken windows. it isnt a big thing in my area and if i am away from it for any amount of time i just take the detector with me.
