AMSOIL 5-20W Synthetic Oil
I found this and everybody seems to agree that it is better than Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. Plus Mobil 1 doesn't have 5-20W they got 0-20W.
Vets, mechanics, whoever is out there.. need your advice... Mobil 1 0-20W or AMSOIL 5-20W.

Thanks

i have been using amsoil for a while now and its suppose to be the best in synthetics. there was a previous thread about the XL-7500 product vs the 2000 series that they offer. basically there was some argument if the XL was full synthetic or not. the XL is made from group III stock which is now considered "synthetic". its actually made from the same mineral oil that the regular oil is made from but refined so that it resembles synthetic properties. mobil 1 i believe uses group III stock as well if you want to compare(i could be wrong). the only pure synthetic from amsoil is the 2000 series which is from group IV and is fully synthetic. but there is no 5w20 weight for that oil. i bought the XL-7500 without knowing this and plan on using it but will probably go back to 2000 series after next oil change. they have a 0w30 for the 2000 series which will work in our engines.
here is some info on different groups Oil Groups

M1
M1 is Group IV synthetic.
2000 series Amsoil & M1 have the same base stock. Amsoil has a better additive pkg.
7500 is not Group IV - it's group III....it's a wanna be.
Both oils are Very Very good .....unless you want to run them for 15,000 miles, you will never see the difference.
Recently, M1 has been performing better than Amsoil in used oil analyis testing on that crazy motor oil site.

I am sorry oil sales must be good since they have added household cleaning products and water filters.

I doubt about this... As the thread creator said above, Mobil1 has no 5W-20 yet... :o

M1 5w-20???
If Mobil 1 has a 5W-20, that's news to me - never seen it.
They have a 0W-30 and a 5W-30 for sure.
Note the owners manual says 5W-20 is recommended, it doesn't say manditory or required.
The W number on oil refers to its' cold weather pour characteristics, the top number is what counts in terms of viscosity at nominal temperature.
Mobil 1 is more "popular" because it's more readily obtainable and does cost less than Amsoil. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Amsoil, or M1 for that matter. They just market their products differently.
A true Group IV synthetic has the advantage of keeping the engine cleaner and lubricates better over a much wider range of temperature than they typical Group III mineral oil, regardless of how much the Group III oil is refined. The biggest difference between Group III and Group IV oils is their cold pour point. Group IV is substantially lower.
Not an issue if you live in a moderate or warm climate, but a big deal if you live in a cold climate.

For those interested in Mobil 1
Autozone is having a deal on all Mobil 1 products.
5 quarts of any Mobil 1 oil + any Mobil 1 oil filter for Acura TL I think it is M1 104
For the package above it is $29.99
That oil filter alone is $9.99

TQ > MPG
Mobil does make 5w-20, I just bought some last week.
Its just not synthetic, its their "drive clean" oil, which is regular dino oil.
If you change your oil every 3500, imo synthetic is a waste of $$.

The "W" rating tells you how the oil flows in freezing temperatures by comparing it with a regular oil of that straight weight.
Ergo: 10W-30 flows like straight 10 weight oil does at freezing temps.
In warm climates such as Florida and SoCal, it doesn't mean anything. It's irrelevant.
I am a longtime (20 years) user of Mobil 1 in cars and motorcycles. I have no experience with Amsoil.

Amsol is far better than Mobil 1. Redline is also much better, but after using both, and spending tons of money on oil for my past cars, I ended up selling them anyway, and the only person to benefit from all the expense was the person who ended up buying my used car's. Is it worth it?....only if you plan to keep the car for 10+ years, or you just like spending money. I'm going to just change the oil often on my new TL, and not bother with spending tons of money on synthetic oil only to have the next owner benefit from my trouble...it's just not worth it.

It's a fact!
I had my last car, a Nissan Maxima, for 14 years. I religiously used Mobil 1 with oil analyses at the changes. After 100,000 miles, there was no discernable wear or difference in the engines operation from when it was new. Oil pressure, compression, etc. were all the same as new.
I finally sold the car to my best friend's 17 year old daughter. Six weeks later, she rear-ended another car at noon on a Saturday and totalled it. (She wasn't hurt).
So, I hear what you're saying. But I also got $4,000 for my car 14 years after paying $16,500 for it new. That's less than $1,000 a year depreciation.
I'll never see that with the TL with or without synthetic oil. I'll use it anyway. It's worth the peace of mind that goes with it. (to me)

I'm not an expert, but I figure that the synthetic gives me a margin of error in case I don't make it right on time for an oil change. I can buy Mobil1 at Costco and I really only need about 3 oil changes per year, so at least it's not a big waste of money.
It's probably just a coincidence, but my engine on '99 TL which I got in early October 1998 runs as smoothly as ever. Im pretty sure that the Mobil 1 helped me avoid the terrible tranny problems too.
