I found this article, looks to be fairly old but it's pretty neat. They took all the legendary muscle cars and ran them against the new muscle cars. They leveled the playing field by letting eveyone run modern tires so the old cars weren't handicapped and 100 octane which some of the old ones required. They also took them around corners.
Anyone know where this same type of test can be found on the import side of things?

Interesting article. It would be interesting to see a similar article with German cars.
As far as Asian imports go (and with very few exceptions), there is not as storied a performance legacy as with domestics and Germans. Most pre-80s imports were designed as fairly cheap transportation, where modern tire upgrades still won't allow it to even remotely come near the performance of modern imports. (Even in the rare cases where imports were modded back then, the mods only made them less slow.)
However, I would like to see a current vs 1990s era contest with Japanese imports.

VERY disappointed with the 442. What the? Could be attributed to the actual owner driving it I guess and not a pro. The Viper has to be my favorite out of all of these though... always drooled over them since the first time I saw a black RT/10 and a Viper Blue/white GTS coupe. Those are some pretty embarrassing times for the SS and Firehawk too. They can tick off low 13's all day, especially the LT4 ones.
Gotta say though, love every single car included in this test.... yes, even the Mustangs.
It brings a smile to my face every time I see a mid 60's to early 70's muscle car on the road.... just a month ago I saw a mint black GN in front of a bar, and a while back I saw a nice Olds 442 also.

but stock for stock, wouldnt the current japanese/german cars beat the old ones?
like someone said, american muscle hasnt really changed their power output by much (or did they?) but the japanese and germans have.

Yea, the newer Japanese cars are a bit faster than the older ones. Even though the Japanese cars were limited by the 280ps gentlemen agreement until very recently, most companies just underrated their engines. A lot of them seem to focus on handling rather than raw power though.

^^^ Great Read!!
Best Motoring is great.... just like how I love seeing a clean 60's or 70's muscle car, I also really like 80's and 90's imports. There's a guy around my way with a black modded Supra with a body kit (which I didn't care much for) but still, something about that Supra was just sinister. I swear it was quiet as death and it just sent chills up my spine for some reason.
I'm not surprised that the older vehicles are similar in performance to newer generations, but you have to realize the newer generation of vehicles are more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient, they also weigh more as they offer more luxury and technology and they are safer vehicles for their passengers.
Technology hasn't made these cars faster, power was always very easy to obtain, technology allowed these cars to be more efficient in every aspect.

I think a clash of the titans will be nice. the best of Europe, Japan and America meet up.
It may be a bit predictable in certain categories like handling will most like go to Japan bcuz of weight and suspension but then again the germans could take it too.
Clash of the titans is definitely a good idea.
Supra's, RX-7's, NSX's, 3000gt's and Skyline's VS camaro's, mustangs, firebird's, trans am's, GN's and prowlers, vs the audi's and v dubs'
Evo's and Sti's vs the Srt 4's.
cobalts, focus's, vs civics, integra's Rsx's, scion's, celica's and MR-2's..
I love it
