Airbags exploded from pothole
Airbags exploded from pothole
Has anyone with 05's and 06's ever had the airbags explode from hitting a pothole? I was reading a review on a 2005 model where someone claims that after hitting a small pothole the airbags exploded. I hope the person is the only one to experience such a thing.
It's possible, and they even put that in the owner's manual.
Any sudden g-force in a direction other than the current direction is how the SRS is triggered, and well, if the pothole is big/deep enough to cause a significant impact force, it'll deploy. Always wear seatbelt and don't sit too close to the steering wheel.
But do not try to swerve to avoid a pothole, because you might lose control of the car. It's extremely rare that the SRS would deploy from hitting a pothole, because it's gotta be more like a giant crater. But it is possible.

Maybe the whole car fell into the pothole!!! If it did go off then it had to be one heck of a jar to the car. If the speed was fast enough and the pothole big enough then it might be possible. But this sounds like a fluke, and not something that is every going to happen to anyone under normal pothole conditions.

That's why you don't hear of airbags inflating when TLs are struck in minor collisions (or we accidentally tap the front end into parking barriers, run over curbs, etc.)-- sensors must detect lots of energy within a specific time frame, and running over a normal "pothole" isn't going to generate that type of force.
