Aftermarket Navigation

Aftermarket Navigation
I just got my TL on Saturday. I am supposed to be getting an aftermarket navigation system put in some time this week. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with these. Do you like them? Does it work well?
Thanks!
Thanks!

i had aftermarket nav in my last car works great. i had an alpine unit(same manufacturer as the TL unit) and it worked great. the functions were just about the same as the TL. I had the CD based one so it was limited to the Northeast Region which didn't bother me cause i wasn't going to go cross country. it was a slower than the TL processing wise. It took a little longer to map the route. there was no voice command obviously but it did have audio that said "next left turn". i had an aftermarket alpine stereo as well and it integrated nicely. the music would be muted and the voice would tell you the next move, just like the TL. just a quick question where are you placing the screen for the NAV? i don't see anyplace to really mount one in dash.

Thanks for your reply. They said that they are going to mount it under all of the other controls (radio, etc.) and are going to be putting it in place of the two compartments underneath the radio.

i guess you can mount it there. the only thing i don't like about that is that you have to look down to see the map. i would prefer to keep my eyes somewhat directed at the road. that's why i asked where the screen was going to be mounted. there just isn't alot of places to put it. you can consider gettng a sunvisor lcd. this will replace your existing visor but has a built in lcd instead of the vanity mirror. might work out better for you. i was just curious why did you opted for the aftermarket NAV and not the factory? If i remember correctly my aftermarket setup cost me close to 2500, this is with Nav and indash lcd headunit. are they going to be able to integrate the mute function of the Nav voice with the stereo?

I would have to be on a waiting list to get a TL with Navi. And I totaled my car on Wednesday and had to get a new car by Monday. I don't know exactly how much the navi was, but everything together after tax, taxes and everything was 33,200.

check this one out
i have had this for a couple months and i'm extremely happy with it....
Garmin has raised the bar for portable automotive navigation with two new products: the StreetPilot 2610 and 2650.
Just choose your destination using StreetPilot’s touch screen or remote control to be automatically guided with turn-by-turn directions and voice prompts. Both the 2610 and 2650 feature color displays, built-in maps, and everything needed to download additional map detail and look up points of interest and addresses in seconds. Select maps and transfer data directly to the unit through a USB connection and onto a standard CompactFlash® memory card. These products are powered using the external speaker with 12/24-volt adapter cable or A/C power adapter (both are included in the purchase).
please don't damage your interior by putting an in dash navi down there....aftermarket in dash navi's cost more. you should have just gotten the tl w/ the navi....

Before you make any decisions, check out the Magellan Roadmate 700/500! There is no better after-maket navigation system! It's based on the system that's been tried and improved in Hertz rental cars (Neverlost) and it's trully great! Here's the link: http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/roadmate.asp
The difference between 700 and 500 is that the former comes with a built-in harddrive containing all the maps for the entire US, while the latter one accepts CompactFlash cards with maps downloaded from PC. But I'd go for the second one unless you routinely criss-cross the US. You can cheaply buy a 512Mb CF card and load a HUGE area on it.

um the screen is around 3x5. yeah i can read it...it has voice prompts...for 950 bucks i think its worth it ...same features as an in dash navi plus portability...accuracy is also great...the arrow never "flies off" of the map....

Check this link, they have the Garmin 2610 for only 730$ and the 2620 for $969. At best buy the 2610 is $999. I'm considering getting the 2620, it has all the US info preloaded, so no messing with CD's or memory cards.

I was going to buy a BMW and to keep within my budget I bought the Garmin 2610 several weeks earlier. When it came time I ended up with the Acura TL with the Navi (still within budget). I've now had a chance to live with both. The 2610 actually has more features than the TL Navi and does a great job. If you have a TL without the Navi the 2610 will get you there just as well and for a lot less money.
