AEM Intake Update

I called AEM today. The 04 TL CAI development is complete and it has been sent to production. I was told it should be available in six to eight weeks.

The dyno they posted makes some pretty bold claims: http://www.aempower.com/pdf/dyno/21-...Acura%20TL.pdf

Any specific reasons? I haven't owned products from either company. My preference would be Comptech, but I don't think they have anything on the horizon.

From all I've heard, Injen makes a better quality and a more reliable product. I have a deal setup fot 215 shipped for the Injen Intake. The AEM one, if they're claiming over 15 HP, will be much more than that. That price just isn't worth it to me for an extra 3-4 HP.

That dyno is very impressive to me b/c it's power across the entire powerband... peak of 20whp and 20lb-ft of torque... that's worth the extra $100 bucks over the injen .. projected price is most likely around $300.00 for the AEM.

Don't forget that those are numbers for the 6MT .. so deduct about 25% from those numbers to reflect what the automatic would gain from the intake: so about 15whp/15lb-ft of torque ... not too far off from the Injen ..

The Injen dyno has always bugged me. The 'before' dyno is really low, and the 'after' dyno is about what I've seen in other stock 5AT dynos. I'm not saying something is fishy, just that this dyno does not inspire much confidence.

A lot of Injen intakes have been sold. Has anyone put their car on the dyno after install - especially a 6MT?

All dynos are different.. the baseline power isn't so important .. it's the difference that is important, b/c this difference is reproducible on that dyno... baseline power is only important if you wanna see what your car is truly producing .. i'm more interested in the % gains from the intake.

You're right about the difference being key. Maybe this car was brand new or they ran through a different gear - could be many things. Injen did put the run times on the dyno - both were within an hour. That gives me some more confidence. Speaking of confidence, I'd rather see WinPEP printouts than presentation graphics. Hmmm. Some nice gains above 4000. I may go ahead with Injen and let someone else try out AEM's wonderpiece.

I'm not that interested in power-boosting mods for my TL, but that AEM dyno got even MY attention. If the gains are real, they may be worth $$$. I'm tired of being a guinea pig for now; I'll let others lead the way this time.

Injen and Comptech get my vote as well. AEM has just been making their stuff with bad quality lately. They can't even release a balanced pulley for my car (98 Accord Coupe V6) but other companies like Unorthodox can pull it off. I'm sure an intake is an intake to some degree but AEM is just not on my list of favorable companies after modding imports for over 7 years.

the injen dyno looks fishy to me, the aem dyno is consistent with TOV's dyno of a stock 6MT car. if the result of the aem intake produces power like that across the board then i would say its worth the extra $$$. also the injen actually lowers hp and torque numbers at the beginning of the rpm range which is not attractive to me. the aem produces positive numbers all across the power band. the injen only starts looking good after 4K rpm's but who here drives daily past 4K consistently all the time.

Does it include a new ECU for the TL?
