Advice please. Trade '00 528i Sport with TL
Hello there. I have been thinking about this real hard and need some advice.
I own a 2000 528i with premium and sport package. I like it very much but the interior styling is bit outdated. Plus, there are plenty of road noise compared to new generation euros and japanese cars.
I don't drive my car that hard and I don't push it to the edge.
Should trade or should I not?
Thanks.

how badly do you want a new car? do you honestly need one? the tl is a great car but we can't assess whether or not you should get a car. if you can afford it and don't mind a payment thoug, go for it

i would definitely trade it in e39 has model has been around since 96 and is definitely outdated. there are some nice new technology in the TL. i love bmw's and think they are the best driving machines. the TL will be a nice change from your 5 series. You'll probably get a pretty decent trade in for your car from the dealer. as far as not pushing the car to the limit the TL definitely has more power than the 528, i can't say it will out handle it but it will provide the same sporty feel.

I know that the handling on my 528i is better but does not match the powertrain of the TL. But having purchased an '04 MDX recently, I am beginning to like the japanese feel and contemplated on looking at a TL. I was impressed.
I just don't want to have any buyer's remorse and want to make sure I make a sound decision.

Keep It.
There's a reason why BMW is where it is now. We hear TLs are Bimmer 3 / 5 series killer. Lexus LS is Benz S Class Killer... and blah blah blah. If BMW or Benz weren't simply great cars, then they simply wouldn't bother to compare themselves to them. Very simple.

Depends on what you THINK you can get for the 528. Since it's the smallest engine in that series, they can be a little difficult to sell. You say you don't drive it hard, but to be honest all dealerships are going to ASUME you did anyway. Unless you are REALLY prepared to take a bath on the 528, do not trade it. Rather, take it to your local carmax and see what they will offer BEFORE you step one foot into the Acura dealership. That way you can know beforehand exactly what your 528 is worth on the market. In my case, I sold my benz to an individual and got nearly $5,000 more for it than the Acura dealership was willing to offer (of course the benz I got out of was similar to the M-series beemers so there was a lot of "wiggle" room with that type of car). Good luck. BTW - I had a '97 740iL with 105K miles on it. Others withthe same car were experiencing A/C problems at a cost of $2,500 to fix. My advice on your 5 is to get out while you can (i.e. no expensive repairs).

Count,
First off, kudos on the name. It is hilarious!
Secondly, I am a firm believer in doing what makes you feel good, and throwing caution to the wind. However, you have what Consumer Reports calls "The best car ever tested." So, the best thing for you to do, might be to REALLY take your time on deciding to get rid of it. Believe me, feeling regret, remorse etc, after you have just dropped a suitcase worth of cash is NOT COOL.
Third, I hope, for balancing out, you are asking the same questions at the BMW forums. If not, you might want to.

I have same car 2000 528 5sp non-sport
tl is ok car, but terrible torque steer. the fit & finish of 528 way exceeds quality of tl. if you are buying auto tl, its ok, BMw may be dated, but others think its classic, Tl is faster, but the ride and handling of BMW is better, BMw is still the bench mark which all other cars makers shoot for, drive them & you decide, I would wait until next year to see if bugs are worked out,

The original post is along the same lines as the guy who posted a few days ago about trading a 325 for a TL. I wrote that the TL would be an upgrade in everything but at the limits handling, and that if he had a 330i, then there'd be a major dilemma.
I think the same way about this poster. The 528i is the same size dimensionally as the TL, has less power, but, in theory, better handling. If he had a 530i (or better yet, a 540!!! ), I would advise to keep the car unless he just wanted a TL. In this case, the TL is, again, an upgrade, and if there's not too much negative equity in his car loan, and he wants the TL, then....go for it.
Best of luck! Either way, you've either got a great car that you can mod, or will have a great car in the TL, so you can't lose.
