Acura TL Type S at Willow Spring by Keiichi Tsuchiya
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was just watching the May 2007 of Best Motoring. In this video, the drift king, Keiichi Tsuchiya test drove the Acura TL Type S with 6MT and navigation and he set a lap time of 1:32.88 at Willow Spring in California (not sure if that was his first try or not).
So, is that a good time or not? How does that time compare with other cars such as the G35, 335i, and IS350? Any clue? Also, from what I could understand (took some Japanese classes in high school before), he was very impressed by the TL-S and while he was setting the lap time, he was saying , "ii," "sugoi," (which means good),and things like that. He was also able to do drifting easily witht he car. For a moment there, I thought the TL-S is a RWD machine because of his drifting.
I can upload that part of the video if anyone is interested.

Tsuchiya also test drove the LS460 and Shelby GT500.
The LS360 lapped the track in 1:38.31
The first impression of the GT500 is that the clutch is very heavy. But he was quite impressed by the acceleration. He finds the car quite interesting. From what I can see though, it pitches significantly especially under braking as though it was gonna flip over.
Anyways, the lap time of th Shelby GT500 (with 500hp) is 1:29.04.

ok then, i better take that video off cause I was the one who uploaded that. This video is so new that it's pretty hard to find a clip like that on the internet. I guess I will upload it to a new Xanga account so that the chance of being caught is less....I will update the link once I finish uploading.
Anyways, how do you guys like the video? From what drift king said, he also enjoyed the engine very much as he said "kimochii" numerous times, which means, "feeling good."

Stilll... though cool, it scares me how the car has that much body roll looking at it from the outside, from the driver's seat, you don't even notice it because you're too busy trying to go fast. Someone needs to throw in some coilovers for that dude and have him run the track again

Okay Im back from school and did the best I could do at translating all the positive comments given on the TL (there were no negative comments at all ). Tsuchiya saids words like "wow", "nice" ,"really stable and well balanced" a several times in different ways. Some other comments given on the TL were...
the TL-S is a sports minded car
Honda's proud FF sports car
the engine spins well (sorry i could find good way to translate)
the grip of the tires
the FWD has a nice and stable control
light, slick moves
a FWD, but all four wheels doing their job
very popular in U.S.
And Tsuchiya's comment as he finishes, "Why don't they sell this nice car in Japan?"

TL young'un, I was actually the one who posted on youtube, but then I didn't want to get in trouble since youtube is so popular (after just 10 hrs of posting, there were already 28 views). Putting it in a anonymous (did I spell that wrong?) xanga page is safer (although people can still check the ip and stuff..but...I really wanna share the video with my fellow TL owners ) and I'm glad that people like it!
SpeedbawlinTL, nah, that's not really drifting, I was just trying to get attention from people :P But then, I never thought one could perform such slide in a TL either! Tsuchiya made it look so simple, as if anyone could do it easily.
And kudos to JpnSamurai for translating! Glad to hear those words from the drift king himself! Next time someone bashes on the TL, at least I know that to say to shut them up!
And yea, I find that the body roll is acceptable, that's what you'd get if you are really pushing a street car. After he tested the TL, he went on and tested the Shelby GT500 (or a heavily modded mustang ford gt's detuned engine) and man, that car rolls even more than the TL!

sorry... have I really been giving off that impression? I'm in love with my car and I've barely started putting money into it, so I'm still a few years from even thinking about getting rid of my car... I just normally click find new posts and see what's interesting... I guess the 3G topics have drawn my attention a little more lately

That's the good thing with FWD cars, you can toss it around all you want and the chance of spinning out is still less than any RWD cars!
Anyways, could someone post some times of other cars so we can better compare the track performance of the TL-S vs other cars?

haha that's why my dream car is still the NSX-R! Nothing beats the balance of a MR machine!
By the way, that guy in this video is also the record holder of the Usui mountain pass (think Initial D) in Japan using his NSX-R.

iforyou, I love the video. It was great. Very very nice..... Yea, I too, want to see how other cars like the IS350 and the '07 G35 gets in the track times. I think I have seen something similar in a track driven by a Japanese. I don't know if it was indeed this same track with the same guy or not but the '07 TL type-S beat both IS350 and the '07 G35 in the lap times.

Where have you seen the other video you were talking about? Could you may be post the link here so we can have a look? I am sure someone here can tell what track it was. If the TL-S can really beat both IS350 and G35, then that's some good news for us Acura enthusiasts!

it's amazing how R&D got 6s for 0-60mph and 1/4mile in 14.5@98.6mph in the IS350 while C&D did those in 4.9s and 13.5s respectively....

Here is the pic that shows track times. They are driven by the same guy, Keiichi Tsuchiya, and it appears it's a same location! The TL-S came on top, with the lap times of 1:36.67. The IS350 came second at 1:38.24. The new G35 came third at 1:38.67. LOL, the TL-S beat the G35 by whopping 2 full seconds!

Thanks a lot meowCat!! I am just wondering if that track is the same as the one in the other video i uploaded. Cause in that video, the TL-S achieved a laptime of 1:32.88! Anyways, no kidding, the TL-S is fast, the question is, is it faster on the corners, or the straight? or both? jpnsamurai, time for you to do some translation for us please!

hey no problem! iforyou. It appears it's the same track. The Japanese magazine in the picture above indicates it's Willow Springs Raceway. It very hard to read though due to light reflection but if you stare at it good you might see it. I'm assuming it's the same track, unless they have different track layout version or something.. Or maybe Keiichi practiced really good with the TL-S and got even better results.

lol, but 3-4 seconds difference is HUGE! brownie, are you sure that's the same exact version of the track?? At first I thought the TL-S in the magazine was 5AT, but I read "6MT" somewhere in the article..so...it got to be a 6MT too. But anyways, kudos to Honda for making a 286hp FWD that can rival 306hp RWD's.

JDM Laser Fogs!
Im almost sure its the same track.
Only thing I can think of is diffferent days of testing. In the vid. they have the Ford and Lexus, and in the mag. they have the RDX, G, and IS.
But yea TL ftw!
Edit: the guy speaking says Willow springs lol
