745li vs TL

Anyone know the performance on the BMW 745Li?

We were at a light in south Tampa; I floored it, he was on my ass, but pulled out and could NOT pass me - kinda felt as if we were even - and, no, I did NOT lift!

At the next light, he glanced over to my way, and I nodded, "yeah I'm bad..."

And I thought "Shi-, how much money did you spend on THAT"?

True enough, after spending time reading these posts, I have come to despise the Bring My Wallets...

Sigh :killer: :killer:
What is fast enough for that kind of price?

And BMW.com has all the specs on the 745 if you really wanted to look.

You mean the one Consumer Reports thinks is piece of crap (Not Recommended) and one of the most expensive ($80,000+) luxury sedans on the market today?

I've met 3 of their owners so far, and every one of them said they're ready to tell BMW as the car spends as much or more time in the shop as it does in their possession. One of whom is spending the summer without the A/C working a majority of the time.

I just drove one over the weekend at a Lexus drive event. I was pretty impressed with the way the car handled, especially since it's so big. To me, IDrive wasn't horribly complicated, but I could see how the novelty of it would wear off quite quickly. And with a car like that, I don't think straight line performance is their main goal. I don't know why people seem to think that the more money you pay, the faster it should go.

Horsepower: 325 @ 6100 rpms
Torque: 330 @ 3600 rpms
0-60: 5.9 seconds (from BMW's website, usually a conservative figure).

To all the naysayers, the 7 series is a dream for me (except when I see the Bangle butt). I'm not mentioning the reliability aspect, but the TL and 7 are not in the same league. As many have mentioned the TL has a lot of value baked in.

IMO the 7 series is one of the ugliest cars on the road. IMO interior is junk and everything creaks. If you want to drive a boat, then go buy a SeaRay or something, at least boats are supposed to creak.

I double checked what the site listed for the regular 745i and it says 0-60 in 5.9 seconds also. The car here is a 745li, which designates the long wheelbase model and is a little heavier than the regular version. I'd expect it to be slightly slower.

Just thought I would give my .02. I pulled a 745 LI a month ago getting on a 2 lane on ramp in Broward. It for once was not for fun as the lane was closed on my side. I knew the guy in the other car as we had just left work @ the same time. I had windows down and heard him kill it so i dropped it down and did the same. I think the longer wheel base adds a hell of alot more weight but i can tell you his eyes were as big as the BMW spinner on the front. No doubt the car is in a diff. class, but a kill is a kill!

How can you put down the 745il. That is one nice machine. Whoever bashed that car just does not know what they are saying. Now if you raced a 760il that would be a completely different story. I love my TL but I have to respect when I see other nice cars. And trust me that is one nice car.

if you had the $$$ to by one, you probably would. at that level it's not about how fast, or if it can corner like a porsche. it's about status.

that driver probably never stepped on the gas like that before, probably crapped his pants and backed off.

Like hell I would!

If Consumer Reports and every owner I personally interview think it's a piece of sh|t from a reliablilty standpoint, I don't care whether the car is $30K, $50K, $90K, does 0 - 60 in 3 seconds, drives like the best handling Porche ever built, or has a halographic navagation system with a hooker that comes out and blows me, the manufacturer can keep it.

Life is too short to have to deal with regular trips to the dealer's service dept because of what doesn't work 'this week'.

For the price of a 745 I would expect at least 400hp. I dont understand why these big luxury cars have such low HP and such high prices. A S 500 only has 275 hp and starts out at 76 grand. I know your not supposed to race these cars but geez add some power with that luxury. That's just my opinion though, I know there are other obvious reasons people are buying these cars. Maybe if I was older and made enough to pay for one I would think differently.

S500 has 302 hp that is adequate for its purpose. Note also that it has 339 l/f of torque that makes it more responsive than TL in everyday driving. To get 400hp in the 7-series(438 hp to be exact) you need to shell out at least $110K. You can get 469hp in E55 for about the same ($80K) price as well equipped 745Li. Just remember that you always get what you paid for. There is no way to get 7-series or S-class even with $275hp for $30K.
Camaro owners probably kept wondering why people pay $30K for under-powered Acuras. Where are those Camaros BTW?

Good point...I see it sooooooooooooo much from Acura owners "I paid $30K and I smoked a $100K car..." When I had my TL and win races, I never thought about "he paid more than me and I still smoked him..."

Reality is, the 745Li owner probably left not giving a sh!t cuz he still went home in a 7er.

Now if you want to race a $80K car, I'll race you in my E55...wanna see the outcome?

You're paying for more than just the engine, though. For example, the upper level S-Classes from Mercedes have expensive leather lining the center console and dash...most of us are driving around with plain old plastic (soft touch material, in the case of the TL) on our dashes. The NSX has that too. And the seats are full leather, not like lower end cars where only the seating surfaces are leather, even though they're advertised as leather seats.

In my opinion just from seeing the insides of 7 series and S class, S seems more luxurious to me. It is almost as if BMW is more sports oriented (puts more into suspension and engine than I/E design) than luxury oriented. I have heard that the S500 is more nimble and agile than the 745i. All I know is that when I sat in the S500 I almost urinated on the seat I was so excited. Touch the leather and it feels like it will melt in your hands. Now, this is not to say that the 7 series design isn't nice, but I feel the S class is better in that aspect. It does say some thing for BMW though to be able to extract as much if not more power out of a .5 liter smaller engine.

Simple. You don't understand luxury and my explaining it won't help much. Understand there is more to a car than PEAK horsepower. It's called smoothness (something no V-6 can match with a V-8), exclusivityand tons of other things.

I no way love the 7. It is a horrible looking car and the quality is plain ridiculous and the horror stories are all over. But it is the most drivers oriented big car, that is one thing no one can take away from it.
No one cross shops a 7 with a TL, G35, ES, C-class. And they don't give 2 shits if they are 0-60 in .2 seconds slower.

Ha ok your right I don't understand luxury.

As for the other folks that responded I totally understand why they cost so much and don't have to have giant engines, their name. But just being as it is my opinion I would rather get the AMG then the 745 just because I like power. Now if I get to a point where I could afford fast in one car and luxury in another my opinion would change. :blaze:
