6MT user-dropping gear question

I usually drive at 80mph on and interstate in 6th gear. If i really want to pass some one hardcore can I downshit to third or is that bad. I just did it today and god was that extreme fast. I use to play it safe and drop to fourth, it was quick but really did not put me back in my seat quick.

6-3?? what was the rpm's at??? it all depends. if you are at 80mph the rpms will probably be about a little above 2500, going to third would jump it to 6K??? that would be real close to redline wouldn't it? i usually downshift 1 or 2 gears to get some more juice. to really peel out usually 2 gears. if you go from 6-3 how long are you in 3 for?? it can't be much time then you would have to shift again. the heart of the torque for the TL is between 4-6K rpm. that's where you want to keep the car if you want performance.

um i don't have a 6MT but i've driven a lot of stick cars before and i don't think its going to be bad. i heard that you can push the 3rd gear up to 100mph....and at 80 mph i'm guessing your rpm at 6th gear would be around 2500-3000? if that's the case shifting down to 3rd gear would probably bring it up to around 4500-5000...red line is at 6600 i think so no problem...

3rd tops out at 89, so you are not going to be there long. You have most of your torque if you are in 4th, so you might as well drop it to 4th. I would at 80.

In 6th gear at 80mph my rpms read about 2700, when I dropped to third it went to about 6000, and I was only there for about 2 seconds before switching to 4th

I know you made that one up because 80mph is redline on third, ergo, your engine would be dead. 6th is usually sufficient for passing in the highway. On 2 lane roads 4th is more than plenty for vigorous passing at over 60mph.

If you rev the engine too high, don't worry, the rev limiter will let you know. LOL

what's the point oh dropping into 3rd at 80mph if it jumps to 6K rpm?? the fuel cut is going to kick in just past redline and no more power. staying in gear for not even 2 seconds don't yield great acceleration. from 6th gear i would go to 4th to pass someone.
