6MT - Need a new one!

So, I had a buzzing in my 6-speed since i purchased it. I noticed it in 3RD gear only under light accleration. THe shifter was rattling. IF you physically put pressure on it the rattling/buzzing would go away - remove the hand and it would come back.

I took it to the dealer shortly after purchasing, but of course I could not duplicate it that day - as it was intermittent. The rattling became more consistent over time.

I have just taken to the dealer to get my second clutch slave replaced and figured that they could take care of this while they had it. To make a 2 week story short, they needed to replace the third gear, shift fork and synchro. I told them that it was difficult to get in to first and second as well and to take a look when they got the tranny apart.

I was hesitant to have the dealer work on the tranny, but what to do??

After they put the tranny together, the service advisor calls me and says the mechanic is not happy with the way it is shifting. It is difficult to get into reverse (no problem before they took it apart). Also indicated that synchro and shifter fork for 1ST and 2ND needed to be replaced as well.

Give the mechanic and dealer credit that they just didn't give me the car back and let me complain about the way it shifted again. Now , they are trying to get Acura to replace the transmission. Question is will they replace with a new 6-sp or rebuilt? Isn't this transmission new for 2004? I hope they don't have a lot of rebuilt ones to choose from. Car has 28K miles on it. Does anyone have any experience with a defective 6-sp? IS this a new tranny for 2004 TL?

I bought the car with 350 miles. I put about 75 or so in my two test drives. So, someone must have drove the Sh** out of it to bend three shifting forks and screw up three synchros. To think I switched to GSM to help with the shifting and iit was the tranny all along. I know how to drive a manual, obviously some else did not.

I really don't understand you folks that think so little of the service department at a dealership. They have all information and assistance available for the car, period.

Sorry to hear about the problem but it sounds like the dealer is trying to get it fixed for you. Does it really matter if the tranny is new or recon? It will be in much better shape than the one it's replacing. You will still have the balance of your factory warranty.

Give the system a chance to work properly. If you have additional problems latter, react accordingly. It does sound like your transmission was not right from the factory.

Will it cost you anything?

No, it will not cost me anything, but let me explain why the hesitance regarding having the dealer service a major component like the Transmission.

First, I want to give credit to the mechanic who did try and service the transmission and acknowledged that it was not shifting properly after he replaced third gear and suggested a replacement transmission. Most dealers/mechanics would have handed the car back to the customer and let them complain about the problems - but Norris Acura, Ellicott City did the right thing and I am glad about that.

Dealer mechanics typically do not have the repetitive experience to repair major items like engine rebuilds or transmission rebuilds. My experience is case in point. The shifting problem the mechanic was experiencing after the rebuild was not with 3RD gear, which he fixed, but with Reverse, which was not a problem prior to the remove and repair action. MT rebuilds are not easy with these new 6-sp transmissions - much more difficult than automatics. Mine was the first 6-sp that they have worked on and the result was what I expected - it was not successful.

How about an analogy - if you were to need open heart surgery, would you rather go to a General Practitioner or someone specializing in open heart surgery? I know where I would go and I definitely would not go to someone who is performing his first operation - if I had a choice.

In this case, I had no choice, but the dealer is trying to make good, which is what I expect and I commend them for that. The Service Advisor has been helpful and is going to replace my cabin air filter for the price of the filter (no labor charge) due to the inconvience.

The good side is that I have had a TL to drive during this 2 week + ordeal which is keeping the miles off of my car. This is also the reason that I am not giving the dealer a hard time. I have told them all along to do what you need to do, take as long as you need.

Just for clarity on new vs. rebuilt parts. Acura does NOT supply any new replacement parts on major items - they are all rebuilt. This includes engines. The SA indicated that the only new major component that he has received is a new short block. Of course, as many of the old parts are used in rebuilding the motor as possible. He expects my rebuilt transmission to be sourced from a wreck, where only the outside case is used, but all of the internals are new. I am okay with this as long as they give me my 50K mile warranty on the rebuilt tranny, since this issue has been with the car since new. The SA felt that this was a reasonable request and has advised me on the best method of getting this accomplished.

No car yet, but hopefully soon.

My 6MT was replaced pre-delivery to correct a manufacturing defect. I don't know if the replacement was new or a rebuild, but it may have been new given this occurred in November of 2003. The transmission has been trouble free for 38k miles.

OK, now I understand. Under warranty, dealer is only option for no cost repairs and loaner. They also have the pipeline to all available information on problem and repair procedures. How many 6 speed Acura or Honda transmissions do you think the specialist down the street has worked on? How willing is Acura to share secrets about modified repair techniques with him? I would rather deal with the dealer network than an independent that may decide on shortcuts or homemade techniques. Glad your attitude is in check for the work.
