Question 6/mt notchy feeling / maybe ac?

So its really hot here in dc and i have been noticing that when i shift gears it feels like im hitting something like a notchy type of feel. (not grinding) And i dont know if this relates to it but im shifting at 3500 rpm with the ac on and that happens alot but when i shift around 4000-4500 rpm it seems to be smoother. I know that ac drains power in a car but i never thought it was this noticible if this is really the issue. Does anyone else have this feeling or maybe know something that im in the dark about? Thanks

BTW this is my first summer with this car so im hoping thats what it is. tia

usually the notchy feeling is only related to the 6MT when it is cold. when the tranny fluid gets heated up the notchiness goes away. how many miles do you have on the car? many people have reported great results with changing out the fluid and using either GM Syncromesh fluid, Amsoil or redline fluid.

My TL 6MT also felt "notchy" after about 15K miles. Finally changed to GM SM fluid.

Make sure you get GMSM Friction Modified part number 12377916. It WILL make a difference.

How many miles do you have on your car? More than 15K and you should change your fluid.

DIY, follow RR's instructions.

Use Amsoil MTF....GMSFM is just another one of those overpriced OEM fluids; Amsoil MTF is better and cheaper.

Cheaper yes - on what basis is it better? Amsoil MTF tries to be "universal" - GMS FM was designed with a specific tranny in mind, the NV1500.

GMS FM is a blend of petro and ester base oils - very possibly just as "good" as Amsoil's PAO base, even before the more important issue of the add pack is discussed.

It is the friction modifiers that make the real difference in shift quality in transmissions, not the base oils, and GMS FM is the best "feel" I and others have found for Honda trannies - TL and S2000.

It is not overpriced in the sense that one is getting a specifically formulated product, not a "one size fits all" Honda or Amsoil MTF. The Amsoil MTF may be a good rpoduct, but since I am getting such great results with GMS FM, I do not see much reason to go through the hassle of finding out.

Has anyone actually tried Amsoil's product? Where are the testimonials praising its joys?

Just my 2 cents.

Don't worry, I'll have some "real world feedback" for you on that product in about a few weeks.

I know of two, possibly three people who will be using the MTF within the next two weeks...so stay tuned.

BTW, Specialty Formulations Autoglide Honda Z-1 is blended specifically for Honda Z-1 apps only, and is composed of a Grp III/IV/V base oil, and is the same price as Amsoil Universal ATF.

Your Amsoil Universal ATF recommendation is VERY one size fits all, even though it seems to work well for Honda Z-1 apps.

Fair enough.

Specialty Formulations has suspended commerce according to my visit of today.

RR,
Please see this: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/...c&f=8&t=005614

Hopefully it'll just be temporary.

You can do the oil change yourself. I just did mine this afternoon with the GM Synchromesh FM. The manual says to remove the battery and air filter housing but niether is necessary if you have a narrow funnel with an extra long neck. I wasn't happy with the way the car shifted but after the change, it feels great! My wife agrees also with a big thumbs up (it's actually her car) .

this might be a really stupid question but are we talking about changing out the transmission fluid or the oil? I know how to do the basic oil change but the transmission fluid i dunno about all that.

I'm talking about the transmission fluid/oil. I call it oil because that's basically what it is. In fact my "88" Legend called for regular 30 wieght oil in the trasmission. If you can change the engine oil yourself in this car, I'm sure you can change the trans fluid also.

I switched to GM-FM fluid last month. Everything that I didn't like about my 6mt is gone. It really is like getting a new tranny for the price of a fluid change. I'll never go back to Honda fluid again. Also, I'm planning to change out the 5mt fluid in my 1994 Honda DelSol next week, so we'll see if it improves the 5speed as much as it did for the 6mt Acura tranny.

Where to change MT Fluid?

Based on posts I have read, I'd like to try the GM MT fluid recommended. I don't want to mess with doing the change myself. Any suggestions where I can get it done? Will the GM dealer do it? Will Acura do it if I take the oil to them, or do I go to one of he quick lube chains?

If you don't want to do it yourself, I would recommed the Acura dealer. Call the service dept. and see if you can provide the fluid and just pay for the labor. They may tell you that using other than Honda recommended fluid will void the warrantee. (Personally I wouldn't worry about that).

service dept will probably charge an arm and a leg for labor. try checking around for independent shop first. it's just a tranny fluid change and should not be that hard.
