5 AT-->6 MT Transmission Swap...

I'm sure this is more work that it's worth, but let's say you could find a 6MT donor car at a junkyard and get all the parts....has anyone ever entertained the idea of a transmission swap? I'm thinking it's nearly impossible due to the vast number of computers that run the TL.......

Yea you can do it but its more trouble than its worth like what people said. With the money you spend on parts and all the supporting things you will need your better off trading your car for a manual car at the end of the day.

Well that's kind of the reason for my question...it's not easy to find low mileage 6MT TL-S these days....my car only has 24K on the clock....

yeah it will get pricey bud. my 04 tl 6-speed tranny swap costs about 4500 dollars installed. the bulk of the money is going to be labor and supporting parts. gl man

Is that using a new tranny and accompanying parts or all from a junkyard donor car?

If catastrophic headaches, unexpected 'bumps in the road', and an endless stream of expenses are your thing, then go for it! There's more components throughout the car that have to be changed out than you can imagine.

Or, you can maintain your sanity along with your bank account and find a 6 speed while dumping your A/T.

, besides the 6MT has stiffer sway bars, the Brembo front brakes. Far easier finding a nice 6MT over converting a 5AT to a 6MT. There are far better projects to take on.

My TL-S already has the Brembos and a stiffer front sway bar......anyways, this is all a pipe dream....my dad is into old muscle cars and a tranny swap on those guys is a Saturday afternoon job...I'm a realist, I knew it was going to be nearly impossible.

I'm hesitant to dump my AT since I picked it up with only 3K miles on the clock and I have put a couple grand in aftermarket parts into it. Don't get me wrong, I love my car, now that it's tuned pretty good, I just get the bug to fly through the gears....

Doing such a swap on those old '60's muscle cars was a Saturday afternoon job, but today's cars like our 3G TL's have a whole variety of component differences between the manual and automatic models that you can't see right off the bat such as computer, wiring harnesses, the differential, etc.

I wouldn't think of trying to do this to a TL, that is unless I was already suicidal.

swapping the mods from your car over to another would be FAR easier than a 6mt swap.

Dude if you got the money for a tranny swap I'd say buy a project car to play with. The TL is a great car and fun to play with but it is overweight luxury car. I bought my TL-S with out even thinking of a manual trans because of the traffic I drive in. Get something to play with on the weekends and let the TL be your DD....

Oh my bad, I should have read your avatar. Also the clutch on the Type-S 6MT is different than the non- Type-S 6MT clutch FWIW.
