Which 5-20 oil does acura use for oil changes?
Have a 2006 5at TL. last time I took the TL for oil change they tried to charge me over$40.00 for the oil change. Is it mobil 5-20 sythetic oil the dealer uses? Also what should be printed on the quart of oil? tri-synthetic regular synthetic so many different types. Anyhow thank you guys in advance.

Have a seat.... most dealerships use bulk oil. What is bulk oil ? Whatever is priced cheap and comes in large barrels (55 gallon ?). Hell, often the dealership does Not even use the recommended 5w-20. They use a more generic 5w-30.

I knew it, when I went in for my first oil change(maintenance) and I saw on the paperwork it said 5W-30.... I called them up when I got home(That's when I saw it) and they told me they filled up with 5W-20... Not knowingly, but still paranoid, I just believed what they said pretending to think it was just a typo.
From now on, I'm doing this shit my self, that's bullshit. I hope you're wrong I would not like to be running on shit oil.

I thought it was regular dino oil rather than synthetic, though.

All depends on the dealer... they are all different. I suggest you change your own oil. It's the only way to ensure it done properly with the oil of your choice.

I'm sure they could sell you Honda oil if you wanted it at their parts department, but do they use Honda oil for their oil changes.... I really doubt it. Most dealers by oil from a local distributer in bulk format, and it's probably based on price more than anything. I pretty sure Acura doesn't specify a certain brand of oil, just the weight. They may specify synth in the RDX because of turbo, but that's about all they will specify.

Appreciate all the feedback. Just got back from purchasing a case of mobil 5-20 full synthetic , $6.19 a quart. Wow dealer was charging 8.60 a quart. Now all I need is an AO1 filter or maybe will get the 15400-pcx-004.

As for brand, I'd go with Mobil1, Redline, or Amsoil. Of course there are other synthetics as well.

I would use the PCX filter or the Mobil-1 M104 (not the tiny M110)...

You know there are countless documented cases where the techs simply keep the customers synth oil and fill the car with cheapo dyno. They know that most people don't do oil anaylasys, so they will never know. If you want to run synthetic oil, I can only recommend doing oil changes yourself...

I bring my own Mobil 1 0W20 and Mobil 1 filter to my dealr and he charges me $15 to change it and I'm out in 15 min, and they are on my way home from work, so can't beat that deal. And of course I watch them like a hawk.

If you get hit with 5w-30 it is ok to run, the 5 is the cold weather critical number you are concerned about...the 30 is a non-issue and actually better down this way with 90-100 deg days....5-20 is for epa rating..
search for threads on oil and you will find more info than you can stand...
Mobil1 5-30 at Costco is arounf $26 for six quarts + tax, title and lic...
Our honda and Acura dealer or within a mile of each other, but the Honda dealer has a free standing drive through lube that I use as I can watch to asure Mobil 1 goes in....etc...

Mobil 1 users and other brand users beware- formula changes to a lower grade base stock have recently taken place
To get real Mobil 1 you have to buy the High Mileage Fully Synthetic name now
Those are the words to look for
FULLY Synthetic

I just got the oil changed in my TL on Saturday at a Honda dealership (closer than the Acura dealership). They told me that they use 5W-20 Honda brand oil on all high performance VTEC engines. I asked what "Honda" oil really is and he said it's a synthetic blend made by Mobil. Oil, filter, drain plug washer, vacuum and 24 point inspection in 30 minutes for $30.99. From what I can tell the Acura dealer does the exact same thing for $15.00 more.

I got A1 Service for $90.00 Jesus Christ... $90 for an oil change, tire rotation and a visual inspection? Looks like I got screwed big time, lol. Does the TL-S take 5W-20? Should I use full synthetic, I have 11,000 miles on the car and have had it just over 3 months. I'm going to do my oil change myself on my next cycle, no way will acura screw me again. The service at Precision is fantastic, but paying that much for an easy DIY is ridiculous... It's just hard to do it on a city street, but atleast I'll know what they are really putting in my baby.
