4-bangers vs the sedan.

I got onto the highway last night and I noticed a white WRX hatch (09+) bobbing and weaving through lanes. Well I'm still doing 68mph when he passes me, slows down, down shifts, and guns it again. So he ran a fly-by on me twice basically . Well, eventually we hit a ~1.5 mile straight that was empty in front of us. This time I sped up and got next to him.

- #1: We punched it at about 80mph and I pulled to the top of 3rd in SS. ~2 cars.

- #2/3: We ran from 55mph twice and each time I left about 2-3 cars between us before I would let off.

I thought they would be faster, but I don't know. It was fun, but the guy was a sore loser. He gave me the finger and tried to run one more fly-by but I gave him a thumbs down out of the window and exited before he could pass me.

__________________________________________________

Later on, on that exact same patch of freeway, I ran into an Altima on what looked like 20's. Didn't really care until the car started tail-gating the shit out of me.. I left it in D and just sped enough to put some distance between us. Well, he ended up pulling up right next to me. I put it in 3rd and gunned it and left him with about ~3 car lengths between us. Then he tried to run a fly-by so I let him catch up, still in 3rd at 80mph and gunned it again. I managed to stop his pull and do some damage of my own. About 2 car lengths between us before I shut down again.

So yeah, there's been a few other runs here and there...nothing really out of the ordinary.

- Pulled on an 05-06 RSX type-s w/ 1 passenger from a 60 roll. About 2 car lengths before we shut down.

- Had a newer accord coupe gun it in front of me after revving at me at a light. He had about a car length in front of me and I stopped his pull, put a car between us, and shut down.

Uhh yeah, that's about it for now.

I figured a RSX Type-S would hold its ground more than losing 2 lengths to a 5AT TL....

Ehh.. It's the 3rd Type-S I've put in work on from a roll. I don't know what to say really. The only time I've had a close encounter with a Type-S was from a dig. I barely etched him out. I have a video somewhere on youtube.

FWIW: All models 05-06.
- Type-S #1: Driver only. I/E. 25 roll. TL in "L". 1.5 cars between us before I shut down.

- Type-S #2: +1 passenger in both cars. I/E. 55 roll, TL in 2nd gear. 2-3 car lengths before I shut down.

- Type-S #3: +1 passenger in the RSX. Driver only in the TL. 60 roll. ~2 car lengths before I shut down..

I forgot to add that I usually ride around with a 1/4 tank of gas along with the spare and all misc. stuff removed. I'm a little bit lighter. lol

yeah dude i just pulled on a rsx-s had to be 05-06 (i know because i had an 06). first he pulled a fly-by on me while i was doing 68mph or so( i keep it under 70, i feel like i save gas that way) i first said to myself that i would ignore it but then he slowed down just a bit to stay in front and when i switched lanes he did too. then i passed him and got next to him he looked at me and i told him let's go, so we slowed down to about 55 -60mph. and we went at it his had exhaust i heard him next to me as i pulled away. to his defense, he had a passanger, but then again i had a stroller, car seat and i have 20 inch wheels...lol. cool dude he gave me a peace out sign as i got off the ramp.

You sure it was a WRX and not a regular Impreza? The new WRX's are pretty quick. For you to put 2 cars on him and you are stock is pretty
I'm not saying you're lying but that is very fishy...

The 2009 WRXs only run about 225whp, which I don't think is too far from a base TL.

Combined that they were running around the speed where Lancers/Imprezas start losing steam, I'd say it seems possible.

I know, my bad. It's an '87 CRX with I/E... We thought the camera would be able to zoom in.

I have another video with the same camera of me pulling on an older S4 by 2-3 car lengths from a 60 roll But the footage is crap. He had 2 passengers and shit in the trunk. My TL was driver only.

See! Definitely not impossible.

Well, I can tell you this much; it definitely was not an STI because 1) they should/would wipe the floor with me. 2) I've raced one from a roll and from a dig numerous times and he beat me by a good amount each time (obviously).

After doing some quick research and verification on google images, I can guarantee you it wasn't an impreza hatchback either. It was definitely a WRX. The guy I raced had a hood scoop and dual exhaust, but not quads like the STI.

A base 5AT TL usually dyno's somewhere in the ballpark of ~210whp, I think. So 15whp is quite a bit more, no?

That's another thing I was going to mention, maybe we just ran at a roll that was more befitting to the TL's needs vs the WRX's.

This might sound dumb of me for saying but what if these guys make mistakes while driving or shifting, or they're just not used to there cars.

I mean, as far as my TL goes, I'm an AT. There's really nothing for me to mess up on even in SS. Maybe these guys aren't used to there cars... or maybe I caught them slippin'..? I don't know. I'm just trying to make sense of the situation.

Ahh you know what, it was probably an '08. They come with 224/226. The '09s are much quicker, actually just about as fast as the STi hatch. I ran an STi hatch with at least exhaust on the highway once. We both punched it (at least I thought), then I let off for a second because I wasn't sure if he was going, but he was! He ended up slowly walking me. I think if I didn't let off it would've been a great run.

A guy I know has an '09 hatch with I/DP/tune. Needless to say it's very quick. I've never run him, but I'd love to.

See I wasn't lying. lol jk. I knew it was a newer one which is why I mentioned 09+ but I didn't know that the power output was bumped up in 2009. So, FWIW I beat an '08 WRX hatch. Not much of a kill though now after looking at the specs. haha

agreed. we had a well-driven bone stocker '09 rex do a 12.9 @ 104.5 up the road here.

what's really sick about that is they are tuning well over 300/300 atw @ stg. 2

That really is impressive. Makes you wonder why people buy 335i's when you could have something much lighter with more power for half the price just about.

Well, it's a 4-banger..

I was pumping gas at the local shell last night and I complimented a kid on his Cobalt SS. After a little bit of small talk we agreed to a friendly run. It was definitely a weird series of races though.. We ran like 5-6 times.

Cobalt SS Supercharged:
- Driver + passenger (110lbs. I asked. LOL)
- Intake
- Stage 2 Pulley

TL:
- Driver only.
- 99.9% stock

Race 1: 25 roll. TL in "L"
- I managed to poke my nose out when we launched but he reeled me in and I shut down when he was about 1.5 cars ahead.
- Cobalt: 1.
- TL: 0.

Race 2: 50 roll. TL in SS-2nd gear.
- At the third honk he started pulling and I short-shifted into 3rd. I shut down with him about 2-2.5 car lengths ahead of me.
- Cobalt: 2.
- TL: 0.

Race 3: 80 roll. TL in SS-3rd gear.
- We stayed even till the top of 3rd.
- Tie.

Race 4: 55 roll. TL in SS-2nd gear.
- I timed it perfectly and jumped as soon as I heard the 3rd honk. We stayed even and then I SLOWLY pulled away. By the top of 3rd I had pulled about 1-1.5 car lengths. I couldn't tell so I'll stick to 1 car length.
- Cobalt: 2
- TL: 1

Race 5: 60 Roll. TL in SS-2nd Gear.
- I pulled hard this time. 1-1.5 car lengths. Needless to say I was confused.
- Cobalt: 2
- TL: 2

All in all, it was pretty interesting. I don't get how the tables turned, but they did. I know for sure he was gunning it each time. Oh well, I guess I beat the driver, not the car.

Really nice guy and I'll definitely be looking forward to another encounter with him. Hopefully next time I'll record it.

Hmm. I don't know to be honest. I know the Turbo'd ones are fast, but I don't know much about the S/C'd ones. I just don't understand how it went from him pulling on me, to me pulling on him.

Nice kill though! Pulling on him your maxima.

With street racing, a win is a win; if you fuck up, it's on you.

That stage 2 pulley must have had a lot to do with it because Cobalt SS/SC's are about dead even with an RSX-S and TL's should just about beat an RSX-S everytime I think.

Bolt on RSX-s are quick and should pull any 5AT TL without an issue. A full bolt on 5AT TL vs a full bolt on/KPro RSX should be a good run. The RSX should edge it out though without too much of a problem. An I/RH/E RSX (no KPro) with a good driver should definitely pull on any stock TL; 5AT or 6MT.

agreed. I have seen many RSX-S acuras run mid 14s with just I/E. Add a RH and low 14's with a great driver. Add Kpro and the RSX-S is in the high 13's.

I was talking stock...most RSX-S run about 15.1-15.5 in the 1/4 mile. Capible of much better, but most drivers suck. Plus 3rd gear pop out etc. I used to own one..

Yes this is true too. I have seen stock ones pull off a 14.7 at best however that is rare and takes some abuse.

that it is, but when it comes to imprezas, i wouldn't kick a 335i out of the garage for anything less than a fully built 04-07 sti.

both the motor and the 5spd in the wrx need work to comfortably take it north of 400 atw. at least you start with a bulletproof trans in the sti, so you have the moolah to build the block

o/t: those SS SC results are not shocking and actually speak well for the AT TL imo; i have seen those generally slept on balts move out pretty well in some pockets with few mods.
