I can't speak for other brands, but I've always been told that Honda filters are better than aftermarket. I've never looked into it, I've never checked, personally I don't overly give a fuck. They work and do their job and if my civic, which I sold at 400k km ran it's entire life on them, I'm sure they're fine.

I can't speak for Hyundai, or the likes, but I bet it's like the argument with oil. Everyone has their preference for what they use.

That being said, even though FRAM filters are considered shit, I've yet to hear of cases of people suffering from tragic engine failures due to the FRAM filter. You also can't look at the beater pieces of shit using those filters that end up dying because those engines could be failing for completely unrelated reasons.

Do you want to be the person taking the risks to save 7$ twice a year is the question I ask myself before buying an oil filter. YMMV and as you stated sometimes it bows down to preference rather than anything else.

I think Honda made the switch to FRAM a number of years ago... My cars still seem to run ok

Like you said, it boils down to brand allegiance/preference.

<p>Yeah...I figured I could clean up and reseal the old amber black ring ones I had done a while back. &nbsp;I tried sealing with butyl around the edge (like a tail light) but it leaked pretty badly. &nbsp;Shouldn't leak now but dammit, the lenses aren't in the best condition either. &nbsp;I should have left well enough alone. &nbsp; &nbsp;my clear ones have a better external lens on em.</p>

Isn't butyl what everyone and their dogs recommend to seal tails & headlights? I am no pro (like I'm not even an amateur) but why wouldn't it work in your case?

I believe what J meant was just putting it on the outside rather than in the channel/groove


I use butyl all the time to seal, no problem.
