The 3G Ramblings & General Discussion Thread (Part 2)
Heehee...the timing of this article from Jalopnik was great since I was just chatting with some buddies over beer the other day about this-nice-car-and-that-nice-car-for-cheap-used...
Well, not so much. Of course, the case in point, a Land Rover was failboat to start with...but, still...some amusing insight to the cost of ownership people fail to realize when they think they are getting a "great deal" on a former $$$$$$ car in the used market...

That article is spot on.. Tavarish posts some ridiculous shit. I mean, he's just putting it out there, and most of us have the common sense not to stick our dicks in the hole, but some dumb redneck who is overextended already is going to take his advice. There are some good deals and quasi-reliable rides. IS-F, C63's (minus suspension issues), etc.. but I'm not going to buy a S/C 55 series AMG or a 80k mile e60 M5.. stooopid fooooker.
I mean.. for 30ishK.. you can get a 2012 SRT Whatever.. reliable, tech, fast, cheap to fix.
Sure it's not really baller, but you just put distance between the haters.
For a little more you can get a 2nd gen CTS-V.

I will say this.. if you know how to work a wrench, and do your research. It's easy to find a fun toy that's reliable enough to stay out of the shop. Every car I consider I take a look at the engine. The number sold and reference general parts availability. The J series is fucking everywhere and is a pretty stout competitor for being FF. It's also super easy to service and fix.. ay Justn?

Hopefully, Little Cha will get something decent from the Honda family when it's time for him to have his first car. Of the current line-ups, probably a gently used Fit if he was turning 15 or 16 today.

Honestly, the TL isn't any better. All Doug did was some maintenance items at the dealership. Although pricey, I've already dropped 3k on mostly maintenance shit on my TL, and that was because I did everything myself, or had a buddy do it at a fraction of the price that the acura dealership would have charged. If I did everything through acura, I'm sure my bill would be closer to $5500 as of now. And I've only put 7k miles on the car since buying it.

I bought the right and left driveshaft for $100, no core replacement. I can buy a J engine with less than 70k miles for $600. Tell me more about how cheap an euro car is to fix.. go on.. I'll wait.

I agree...
I bet I've spent that or less on purely maintenance items turning wrenches myself over the course of almost 6 years and over 60K miles.
Dash, rain channel corrosion, slave cylinder o-ring, seatbelt retraction thingy, rebuilt PS pump myself. I'm sure I'm missing some but you can't count tires batteries and oil...those are something you'd have to replace on any car.
I will also say that my car has never ever left me stranded. And if I could find Justin's pants, I'd knock on wood.

I bought a mint example after I wrote my Ex-V6 6MT accord off. That thing is so fucking gutless with its 111lbft of torque and 2700lb weight. I was being beat by EVERYTHING on the road, including completely stock dodge rams that weigh 5500lbs.
The worst thing was that everyone thought I was trying to race them when I really wasn't, because I had to rev the shit out of the engine to get moving anywhere. What that car desperately needed is the GS-R engine out of the integra. That modest power boost would have made it so much more enjoyable. I got tired of driving that civic after 4 months and couldn't wait to get rid of it. How I managed to keep it another 2+ years is beyond me.
Also, good luck parking it anywhere. You'll be shitting bricks that someone's going to steal it. Hey, it's still on the top 10 stolen list, since it came out in 1999!!!
And the B16 really wasn't all that great. My wife at the time had a '95 civic CX and up to about 5000rpm she could keep up with me and only there after would I start to slowly pull away. The B16 makes almost no additional power over the D15 until it hit VTEC. The little additional amount of power it did make was negligible due to the weight increase the SiR had over the CX. Fuck that car!!!
The only good thing was that I bought it for 6500 with 120000km on it, in flawless condition (originally owned by a middle aged Asian woman who NEVER even used VTEC), and I sold it at 210000km for 5000 lol.

Justin...there was a guy in the S2000 that put in a car lift to house a 2nd car underneath with only 10' of clearance. I have almost an extra foot, if I ever trick Betty into letting me. Only thing is you have to figure out clearing the door when open.

In what sense?
I bought all of my parts from the US at a fraction of what they cost here. I also didn't have to deal with being gouged $125+/hour for fucking labour at the dealership, save for an alignment. I assure you my $5500 price is no overestimate. Anyone else who would have been in my shoes would have been raped. Now that I think of it, the price would have probably been even higher than that. Consider yourself lucky for living in the US!
