I'm a white boy (surprised?) and I got pulled over with an ex drug dealer-gone-good in my passenger seat. This dude has tattoos all over his body, arms and neck. The cops pulled him out of the car and grilled him after they found out he had been previously arrested. They kept insisting to search my car and I declined, stating I wouldn't let them search it without a warrant. The cops were furious that they didn't get to rummage through my shit (particularly my buddy's backpack that was in the back seat), but they let us go and did no harm. The reason for the stop? Went through a yellow light and turned right on a red. No, there wasn't a No Turn On Red sign. Guess that's enough if the passenger in your car looks suspicious.

I'm with Maj. Be respectful, but know your rights so that you can protect yourself from bullshit situations like that. (I never found out if my buddy had anything in his bag, but if he had, it would have been my ass. )

I was pulled over jumping a yellow as well....the guy gave me a long lecture...all I asked him was "Sir you were following right behind me, almost tailgating me, if I would have slammed my brakes, we would have gotten into an accident and you would have pushed me into the intersection. Besides I ran a yellow, which is fine. I cleared the intersection before the light turned red. You still think you are going to hand me a ticket?"

Of course there are cops that will "stretch" the law, or for that matter violate the law. I believe they are the exception though. I think if you are respectful, don't cop an attitude and have nothing to hide, you'll be fine.
