Is it not a requirement to have auto insurance in the US? I hear so many stories of people not having insurance down there. In Canada, you can't even have a car parked on the street without insurance. Fucking stupid if you don't require it.

That's crazy. The fines and repercussions for not having insurance here are pretty harsh. I don't think I've ever met anyone who willingly drove around without insurance. The amount you'd pay in just fines, not including law suits, is enough to make people think twice about doing that. I think here, first offence for no insurance is like a $2500 fine.

I was pulled over and didn't have my insurance card on me. (Well I did, it was on my phone) Cop was saying it's a $1200 fine. Don't know if he was BS'n.

Not far from the truth: But it seems if you go to court, and prove that you had insurance, you can get the fine lowered:

At least civil liability. Cars worth under $2K I didn't insure them both sides, if I crashed them I was prepared to pay.
That said I never got in an accident, although I did touch bumpers while backing out of a parking spot at the gym once. My car had nothing, other car had nothing either, I barely made contact. Hope I ain't jinxing myself...

I wish more provinces would follow Quebec in making winters mandatory. Such a smart idea. That being said, you can always sell your current tires and buy new ones. After the season is done, that is. Obviously you'll lose some money but it's better than having your car floating around for the next two winters.

And yeah, for cheaper cars I only had basic coverage. If the car was written off, big deal, go pick up another one for a few thousand bucks. As long as I was covered so I wasn't getting sued, all was good.

Actual CA law states you need liability insurance AT THE VERY LEAST. I had the same mentality on my last car, it was a beater, no need for comprehensive/collision if you're willing to fix it on your own.

it lapsed.. 10 days isn't something to get your panties in a bunch. Hard lesson to learn but nothing to get worked up about.

I wear lace thongs... not panties.

And my take is if you are knowingly driving around without insurance, you're not only putting yourself at risk (I couldn't care less if you got hurt), but you are hurting others. How would you feel if you were in an accident with someone that didn't have insurance and got shafted?

Definitely a good idea. I've never had a winter car without winter tires even when it wasn't obligatory. Good winter tires are a billion times more important than summer tires and yet I see so many people cheaping out. I just wish they stay away from me.

Regarding insurance coverage, also cannot fathom driving illegally without at least civil liability. It's one of these things that can stupidly ruin your life and make you not have a license for quite a couple years. Good luck working if you live a bit remotely from the big cities. Cost is never an issue when you think of the possible negative outcomes, at least to me.

He never said he realized it lapsed before the accident. Obviously if it was 10 fucking days, he was otherwise a responsible citizen up until that point.

How is driving without insurance hurting others? You know insurance is a 2-way street.

I did lol...

Okay Maj, agree to disagree. Of course if I got into an accident with an uninsured motorist, my insurance will cover me under UM/UIM. True. And then I guess it's up to the insurance company to go after the other party to recoup their losses. All in all, I think it's just irresponsible to drive around without insurance more than anything. I think we can agree on that

Of all people, I'd expect you to be the last to believe a post like that on a public forum. Last I checked, my insurance just keeps going without end, unless I cancel it myself; I pay month-to-month because it's just easier that way. Never have to worry about a thing.

Some people pay yearly, but I'd assume it goes on perpetually until someone decides to cancel. Nonetheless, no matter how it works there, I HIGHLY doubt his insurance company didn't send out any notices saying "Hey guess what, you're about to be uninsured. Pay us by this date, or else"

They're in the business of making money, and reminding someone to pay is an insurance company's way of making sure they keep making money.

Yeah I definitely don't think it hurts others, it's a pretty much victim-less crime if you remove the uninsured person from the equation.

Which is why offenders should be beheaded. Clearly they don't need it, they're not using it anyway.

holy shit... went back to that regular versus premium thread to since 2 new pages were added.. and damn.. talk about salad tossing.. it seems there's a pretty interesting divide between ones who think using 87 is okay versus... everyone else that just doesn't bother and just reads the fucking manual and follows what it says..

reminds me of American politics and the climate change debate... NO let's not listen to scientists... it's snowing here, how can the earth be warming up?!

I've been price shopping. The Clarion Inn on Canal St. is like $165 a night. Not bad for the location. Most hotels in that area are like $300-$500 a night.

The fuck????

Sales a car with tranny issues, buys another car known for tranny issues. Then he wants to sale/trade for a smaller car, older, with more miles.
