I've been a deep sea skin diver for 25 years

I'm also a certified scuba instructor (+17 years)
I know / seen many who have died this way
Shallow-water blackout (SWB)
He could have lived, but no one was at the surface to recover him
He likely passed out in the last 2 feet of water
Then drowned because he was still submerged
This shit isn't for amateurs
On my recent trip I spotted a hawksbill turtle
It nested about 60 ft underwater in the reef
I had fins and a snorkel
I said fuck it.. went down and said hello
It was a ~90 second breath hold
Nothing amazing.. but every second I was down there..
I remind myself that I'm one second closer to SWB, no one around
Got some footage, went down one more time ~60s
That was enough for me..
Don't gamble with your life, always swim with a buddy
Don't hyperventilate and do repetitive breath holds
And definitely don't an extended breath hold if you're an amateur
Your body says breath.. get to the surface and breath stupid
Make sure you purge remaining air out of your lungs as you surface though

My dive buddy had SWB after a tec dive to 220 ft.
We were tanked up.. did our dive.. then hit our deco stops..
As we did the last ascent, he passed teh fuck out right at the surface
Still to this day we don't know if it was the mix he was on
Or if he loaded up during deco
We flipped him over in recovery position
He came to and we were good
We were scared at first that he had an air embolism
Shietttt...
I've never seen someone SWB during scuba
Shit is bananas.. to this day I'm like fuck that was close.
Super common when skin diving
Usually me and the brohams will crew like 3 or 4 and go underwater hunting
We go in a decent group because we know after a hunt
One of us might stretch our limits and pass out
Shiett.. I used to do close to 4 minutes under.
Not anymore.. beer > hold breath
