I've been following that thread for a while, and I'm still trying to figure out why dude is giving up the house when he's the bread winner and has a solid case for custody (if the whole story is true).
J's absolutely right - he needs to do some self reflecting. The wife has been checked out for a long time now, and I'm betting the reason isn't just because. When a relationship fails - especially one that has so much baggage - the fault lies on both.
Where I disagree with J is the suggestion to stay with the wife. Again - if the whole story is true - she's endangered their children and has made some incredibly stupid decisions. My plan would be 1) kick wife out 2) file for divorce 3) fight for custody. If he's the bread winner he can afford the house. Worst case - sell house and move into something cheaper. He said about $150k is owed still and the house is work over $400k, so that's a a shit ton of money that can pay off a smaller home, allowing him to pay for daycare for the younger children. It'll suck, but showing your kids how to be strong and make the incredibly hard, but smart decision to bail on their mother and remove them from a dangerous situation far outweighs confusing them by staying in the same house while seeing other people. The older kids may understand it, but the younger ones will be confused and assume that is what a relationship looks like.
