Morning, folks.

Who's got suggestions for making good coffee at home? I think I want a French press or aeropress but am not sure how to distinguish a good one from a bad one. Just want a good cup or two in the morning.

Well, I won't claim to be a coffee expert, but I do drink a lot. I also drink a lot of coffee.

And my two main methods are French Press and Aeropress. I've got a French Press at home and one at the office (I think, no clue if it's still there), and an Aeropress for when I just want a single cup at home.

They're both very similar methods, and IMO, can both create a good cup. But I've found that, by far, it's less the Press and more the other variables (amount of coffee grinds, how finely ground, how long you let it brew, how hot your water is). It takes a little trial and error to get it tweaked in based on your kitchen and how you do it, but IMO it's worth it.

For a french press, they can get expensive. My recommendation is go to IKEA and get the one they have. It's about the cheapest you'll ever find, and it works just the same as something 5x the price.

My routine is 21-22 g of beans. I've been grinding them right before I use them lately, but before Covid I'd just run the whole bag through the grinder at the store. For the time and effort, I don't see a lot of difference between fresh grind and week old grind. But 21-22 g is roughly 7g per cup brewed and gets a dark brew that absorbs light like the black soul of the dark lord satan. Perfect. I've got a stovetop whistle-kettle that I use to warm water to right before boiling. 195F is the perfect temp and where I'm at, I can tell audibly when it starts popping and tapping. Pour that over the beans and let it brew for 4 minutes. Less and it's a little light, more and it starts to get bitter. Press, pour, enjoy.

For the Aeropress, I'll use a scoop and a half (it comes with a scoop of some measurement; not sure what it is) and then pour the same heat water over it until it's at the "4" mark. Let it drip down to 1 or 2 (depending on what cup I'm using) and then add water back up to "4" (I've got a big cup... 1 scoop and water to "4" is enough for a normal cup). Then press it out. Perfect.

People say that the paper filter in the Aeropress makes a smoother cup because it cuts out some of the bitter or tannin or some shit. I don't know. It's fine either way.

Cleanup with the Aeropress is easier, you just unscrew the bottom and push the plunger and a puck of steaming grinds pops out. Quick rinse and you're done. French Press requires partial disassembly if you want to clean it well. I generally just rinse it off during the week and then take it apart to run through the dishwasher on Sunday for a full cleaning.

If you're just wanting to try out an alternate to a coffee maker, I'd say try the IKEA french press first. It's cheap. The cost of entry to an Aeropress is a bit steep which is why I held off for so long on getting one. But in the end, it's nice to have both but if I could only have one, I'd keep the french press.

That's a wall of text because I'm drinking my french press coffee and the lord satan darkness is controlling my fingers and making them taptaptap so much.

I like my bodum french press for coffee as well but hate cleaning it up out of laziness. I’ve been using a Keurig with a reusable cup and paper filter and it’s making do... im hesitant to try the aeropress just because im tired of the single cup per pour method (read: Keurig). I also have a grindr at home and grind about 3/4 lb at a time so as to keep it pseudo fresh and keep in container before i brew every morning. French press requires coarse ground coffee where as i do medium for the Keurig

I would like to try one of your coffees.
Both of you.
I drink only the best Nescafe instant House blend with sugar and Amaretto international delight.
I do pop my pinky up though so my palette is pretty diverse.

I came to the right place for advice. Looks like a cheap French press and some experimentation might be the way to start.

Do you use reusable pods for Nespresso or do you hate the environment and polar bears?

I hate the environment.

Don't have reusable pods. I get my Nespresso stuff either from their store and/or the Starbucks-label sold in Costco.

Though, I will say...the Blonde roast is just nasty.

My caffeine is predominantly through green cha I sip throughout the day in this: https://libreglasstogo.com/

(Best invention...evar.)

By mid-morning though, I do still want some coffee and so, do a Nespresso shot with a dash of half-and-half...but the green cha is consistent throughout the day as I re-steep the same leaves with hot water 2-3 times. Oolong tea FTW.

Does that mean your tea is steeped in it all the time?

Don't you find it gets a bit too strong after a while?

Honkey ass cracker.

No teabags. Teabags are for the bedroom and behind gas station dumpsters.

Loose leaf all day. You gotta drink it faster so it doesn't get too strong and each re-steep it gets lighter. It says it right on the back of the 50# bag you get at 88 Market.

Tea is a great way to have something hot all day. More than 2 cups of coffee in a day for me starts to get risky.

Yessir. FWIW, I finish each fill-up in about 30-45 minutes. When it's piping hot, I do sip but as it cools, I do take my gulps and that goes relatively fast.

And no, I don't mind it strong to be honest. As I go through the second and third fill-ups, the concentration is obviously less and so, that is the balancing effect.

No teabags for me. It's the dried leaves directly into the tea infuser.

Use one scoop with one of these: https://www.davidstea.com/ca_en/teaw...r=Navy#start=1

And I hate fruit in my tea. My tea is straight up 100% the same leaves with no mixture of other tea leaves...

Fruit in tea is soup. May as well throw in a taco, sausage, and breast.

actually the former explains the latter.. just like alcohol, i nurse my tea and it usually is like 3 hours before i finish so toward the end it's super steeped

The only time i have fruit tea is when I'm drinking boba (rarely at that because i hate all their fruit fake flavorings, prefer honey) .. or i'm wanting like an orange tea to go with my high tea cuCUMber sandwiches and shit.

Otherwise, i'm a straight green tea/matcha drinker as well.

Yeah, "bubbletea" in NA is a murdered idea...tapioca in anything sweet and cold.

Bubbletea for me is milk tea and again, no fruit, please. I mean, if we're talking bubbletea with fruit like mango/papaya, that's basically a fruit juice. Stop the "tea" crap, people.

Looks like the TSX community here is just about as dead as the 3G TL.

Wanted to see if someone would be interested in doing a brake mod with me... mainly cause my buddy here's being a wuss and won't do it.

Tempted to buy a front TSX spindle from the UPull and test it just because and see where it goes. Publish research to TSX group here and to TSX Club and see where it goes from there. Potential direct bolt ons.

I ate a bowl of miso, if that means anything.

Skipped the chopsticks for my tempura shrimp and rice.

Gonna give the extra chopsticks to my vietnamese coworker.

Yepp! From but maybe. I'm like 85% sure.

This caliper needs to be bored to fit the TL and can fit somewhere around a 14" rotor. The TSX spindle has smaller bolt holes so the caliper in question may directly bolt on.
