2007 TL questions

Hey! I posted a thread about a week ago (have your laughs) about me getting an 05 tl. But I happened to run into a great deal on a 07 tl that has like 120k miles on It. I want to jump on the car, but I don't know how reliable it is in regards of the tranny and such. Did it have the same 3rd and 4th gear switch problems as the 04-06 tl's? Or is the tranny bulletproof? Thanks guys! Oh and if there are any other things about the car that tends to mess up, I would really appreciate it if you would let me know so I can check it out if I do decide to purchase it.

I have seen several times that the '07 and '08 models of the TL actually have less transmission problems, due to a redesigned transmission. However, someone with more knowledge would be able to give a more 100% answer on that.

There's a lot of cosmetic updates, such as the interior lighting, exterior updates, etc. I have an '08 and I think it's great.

This thread here has a lot of information with very detailed posts about differences between the 2004-2006 and 2007-2008 models:

Thank you Tristan!!! One question though, Is the 07 tl any slower than the 05? On 0-60 times .org it says the 07 is 7 seconds 0-60 while the 05 is 5.8

Not entirely sure about that, however, a lot of threads here seem to say similar things. I guess looking back at when I drove my car I can agree with the 7 second 0-60.

Then again, I drive in residential Long Island, NY a lot, so not much 0-60 going on for me haha

Also, when looking at the car, make sure it's been taken care of. When I was shopping around for my TL, I remember there was one that looked great, but my uncle noticed that the front bumpers were misaligned, and when we pulled the dipstick for the oil, it was clearly burnt. Quickly abandoned that car.

Make sure the electronics and stuff are good, and you should be fine. Definitely grab a mechanic to look at the car before you make any decisions. It already has quite an amount of mileage, and you'll have to do that 105k service soon, so keep that in mind with this car.

If all is well, it seems like a good car, make sure it's not all dinged up too haha

the 0-60 mph for the 2005 was a manual transmission.

manual transmission was discontinued for 2007-2008 base models and was only available for the Type-S model.

2004-2006 base models can be had with automatic or manual transmission.

That mileage is pretty high. I have a 2008 with 86k miles. Make sure the 105k service has been completed.

Oh I read it as 102, that's my fault. Make sure the 105k service was done, then, if not, have the seller do it, or get the price down so you can do it yourself.

When I was shopping for my TL, I had my mechanic check under the hood for anything that could cause a problem later. He also did a walk around, which is when he found that the bumpers were misaligned in a TL I was looking at, which could be from a previous accident. He also found that the oil was burnt in the engine, which meant the past owner didn't change oil often. He took a look underneath to make sure everything looked good, nothing was rusting, and nothing was hanging. I also let him take it for a test drive since he'd know if there was anything wrong with the car.

Once he looked at a second TL after the first disastrous one, he found that it just needed brakes and it's fine.

There are plenty of resources online that say what you should look out for when buying a used car, definitely check it out. Especially with a car with that high mileage, you want a good one. If the previous owner took good care of it, then it should be fine.

Any good mechanic should know what to look out for!

Thanks tristan! I had oneeee more question before i let you go haha. I ran into a type s 2007 tl with about 149k miles for the same price. Im in love with the interior! Which one would you go for? Do you think the type s is any bit more unreliable? Thanks man!

Like paperboy said, the TL-S isn't any less reliable than the base TL. Ultimately it's up to you, I never really liked all of the red lights, plus a good TL-S was not available back when I was looking at cars.

Like before, make sure you have someone experienced look over the car, the TL-S is the performance version, so sometimes people would drive those to their limit (not all) so just make sure she's all good mechanical wise and stuff

Also just re-reading things, the TL-S you're looking at has quite a bit of mileage on it, don't you think? I feel like (almost) 150k is definitely a lot.

I never heard any case of 07-09 tl at fail, if they do I suspected the driver must launch the car like drag racing. Type S is nicer than base TL but the trade off is the suspension is stiffer so you will feel more bump on the road but on the other hand if you corner the car to it limit it will stick to the road like glue with proper tires. Plus it's normal for the type s having heavier steering wheel.

Haha no problem, just check it out, and also don't get too attached to it before you buy it. If you're buying from a dealer, they'll leech off of your emotions towards the car!

Good luck, and let us know if you have anymore questions!
