2006 TL Engine Replacement Help

My sons girlfriend put diesel in his TL last year and it has never run properly since. I took it to the dealer and they charged $750 to check the timing and engine. They advised pulling the heads at over $3000. I have decided to just buy a used engine which I have found for around $1100. I think My son and I could pull this off. I wanted us both to try to swap the engines but I would like to get some advice from anyone who has removed a engine from a 06 TL. I think we could handle this but its never as easy as it looks.

Any advise would be appreciated

Do you have a Helms manual? It would be handy to have for this project.

Since it's a straight swap it should be fairly straight forward as long as you have some knowledge and the right tools. Having the manual is definitely a great idea as well as taking pictures when you deconstruct so you have reference where things go when you put it all back together.

I thought the diesel nozzle was too big to fit in an unleaded collar?

we have owned numerous diesel vehicles. You are correct the diesel nozzle is a different size.

I am wondering about this. If you think you can swap the engine, have you considered pulling the heads yourself? What else has been tried since the problem occurred? How did you get all the diesel out of the fuel system? What components were replaced?

Maybe its just me but isn't replacing the engine a bit much? I would think your fuel system components and spark plugs would need to be replaced first.

Usually the engine will stop running in a fairly short period of time depending on the amount of diesel fuel ingested and usually no failure is noticed, unlike gasoline in a diesel, after the diesel fuel has been thoughly cleansed from the sytem. I've needed to clean diesel fuel out of 2 gasoline vehicles and after dropping the tanks, cleaning fuel system, changing filters had no problems.

An engine change isn't too difficult if you have the equipment and a place to perform the job. Never did it in a TL, but just completely unbolt the subframe and all connectors and lower to the ground, or raise the car up from the cradle assembly. Sounds easy, but with the trans and all the wiring, very time consuming and tedious if you're working blind, so to speak. Best is a FSM or aftermarket manual to help you through the ordeal, and some yards that sell motors will do the exchange, or have a local shop they know do the exchange at a fairly reasonable rate. Check the cost and proceed accordingly.

I did replace the plugs and O2 sensors. The car ran for about another 4 months but the engine tick kept getting louder. It will start but sounds like a piston rod is broken I found a used engine with 64k for $1000. I'm not wasting any more time with the dealer. Can the engine be removed from the top. I have the acura factory manual and it shows removing the engine from from under the car

Anything is possible for the right amount of money. Just stick with a standard swap if you do need to do a swap.
