2004+ transmission and other issues

I did a quick search, didn't exactly see what I was looking for.

anyway, in the 1999-2003 Tl's and Cl's accords etc, there were major Transmission issues.

did Acura fix this for 2004+ TL's in particular?? OR should I just ask: around the 3rd gen TL forum, has there been many that needed to get new transmissions??

also, what are possible problems that have come up on the 2004+ TL??

i found a TL with 74000miles, good condition for $13,900 so if you guys give me good news on the drivetrain, I can look more into it. is that a bit pricey tho? it seems average for what i've seen so far.

THANKS!!

Pretty much the tranny is great except for the 3rd gear problem (talking manual btw). It's a bulletin so if it happens, take it in to the dealership. If not, for most everything else, GM syncromesh MTF.

ok so ill take that first response as to say they fixed the problem on the autos. cool.

anything else I should be aware of on the 2004 TL??

i've also heard that the 2005 had electrical problems, is this true for the 2004 as well?

the one i found also has navi, so no electrical problems FTW

(sadly i think my tranny is about to go within the next 5000miles, i want to trade it in before it gets worse, very small grind, but still runs great)

Honda has some truly great engineering ability, but for whatever reason it hasn't been applied to their automatic transmissions. The failure problems you refer to ended around the 2002-03 model years. Besides the TL/CL, the Accord and Civics had a lot of problems. Since then I think they have been more reliable.

For the record I had a 94 Accord with AT failure at 116k and that was a factor in my decision to get my 04 TL as an MT.

yeah i have 90k on my CL, and im scared because my car is beginning to show some tranny failure symptoms although right now everything is still great besides small grind in gear and 2nd-3rd, etc. everything else is great and i know the car could easily go to 200k...besides tranny. :-(

thats why i dont care this TL has 74000 miles already b/c i know it can do 200k+ as well and it puts it into my price range...and thanks to you guys I can say it shouldn't have tranny issues...even tho ill be losing $10k+ on what I've spent on my CL with trade in (), i know in the long run, a 2004 TL should pay off ()

Acura FTW!

I havent read up on many issues with the TL other than the third gear issue with the synchro. Thats the only thing I have read up on for the manuals other than that others seem to be pretty fine. I dunno why Honda doesnt catch up in the AT trans game. They have the technology I guess they are just ignorant? I have torn apart a few honda autos in class and compared to other companies (ford, chrysler, toyota) the trans is just inferior in design plus they are a lot heavier than they should be compared to the others. I still dont understand why they dont use planetary gearsets they can get so many more gears out of it and more possibilities. The only good thing that I tore apart was the Honda CVT for the hybrids that is one crazy trans and its so simple other than the oil feed tubes to lube the system getting in your way.

the manuals are bullet proof, only issue with it is that the clutch is self adjusting so you won't know how wore down it is when you look to buy a used car, so make sure you do a good PPI before you have to lay out a grand on a new clutch since the previous owner didn't know how to drive.

The auto- the auto trans is very iffy, some are bullet proof from 2004+, some break after 50-60K. Most of them are nice and good as long as the fluid is changed out a head of schedule, every 30K, 3x3 drain and refill procedure. the 2005+ trans were updated with new oil channels to help the trans last longer, no failures have been reported about them, but be careful since half of the cars produced in 05 still have the 04 style trans.
