2004 TL with 102k miles.....

hi

I am planning to buy a 2004 TL with 102k miles for 10000$. is it a good buy? The car is in mint condition inside and out. I love the car when i drive it but wondering whether it is good to keep 10000 on a car above 100k. Please suggest me. also they said they offer extended warranty for 1400$ for another 100k miles or 7 year for mechanical problems. Is it good to take warranty if i take car? How reliable is this car to buy. I know acuras go till 200k with no problems. please give your suggestions..

Check that warranty. If it's the Acura Care 7 year 100K warranty, it is 7 years and 100k from original purchase. (i.e. already expired).

That warranty seems a little cheap for the mileage on the car. I'd check that out, if the car has a good service history it should be a good buy.

As a general rule, I wouldn't pay that much for ANY car with 100k + miles on it.

If $10k is your budget, I'd look at other cars that are more affordable, with less miles.

Sounds like a good deal but please check out the details regarding the warranty as that sounds a bit flawed IMO.

Its not that bad of a deal. I would just never buy a 04-06 AT cuz they have tranny isssues. But other than that 10K is not really that much for this car.

the insurance for 7yrs or 100k means as it has 102k now the new warranty will be till 202k but it was thru third party. it doesnot have navigation and color is silver and black interior. i have another option of buying bmw. that is 2002 325i with 45000miles with premium and sports package for 11000k. Kind of confused whether to go for Acura TL or BMW. can anyone suggest me...

You will have better reliability with the Acura. The bmw is a lot smaller car.

I would have any used car checked by a certified mechanic prior to purchase. You will also need to have reserve funds for unexpected repairs. You state that Acuras go 200k without problems, this is probably not totally true. Things come up and various repairs will be needed.

I would try to get the TL. Third party warranties are usually a waste of money.

that might be true, but not all 2004's TL transmission will fail. i have tons of friends with 2004 acura tl and none of them have had a problem with the transmission! is a matter of luck!

04 05 carried the gen2 trans with its high failure rate- after sometime in 05 gen3 started using a new case design- the same one used on gen2 warranty units

Expect the 105 service is due and will need everything plus more- 1500-2000 dollars american- can negotiate that out of the price- rare is the car that got a 105 then went up for sale~

As long as the Acura dealer says that warranty company is good and they work with them without billing you - then its well worth it-
trans are 4-5 thousand dollars and things like steering pump and rack do tend to fail if fluid not changed,,alternator 500 $$$ yikes
Ck details of warranty for things like `required fluid maitenance` and who can do it

bimmers are known as Break My Wallet unless its got full replacement warranty for things like brakes and all the usual- its a different mentality of how they are made compared to japanese cars--made to wear out quickly

Looked at a lexus?.. or a TL from our `member cars for sale` section?

This is my first post, so it may as well be something I know all about. If the BMW is an auto, don't get it. The auto trans is likely to fail. If it's a manual, it's up to you, but I'd rather get a higher mileage 330 for the same price. The 325s have 184 hp, and tuning is expensive (and pointless unless it's F/I). Keep in mind the only thing exciting about that particular BMW will be the handling and RWD.

I had to choose between another 330, high-mileage M3, or TL for reliability. I chose the TL and it's now in the shop getting a new trans.... M/T. I bought my TL from Carmax and I'm in the middle of trying to get them to give me another car since I've only had the TL for less than a month. Honestly, I'd get a high-mileage M if I got the chance again.

If you do plan on fixing everything yourself, which isn't hard on the BMW, I'd go with a 330. As you may be able to tell, I can't recommend a 325, just too boring.

If it has already had the 105,000 mile service, it's one heck of a deal. If not, it's still not a bad deal. If the car has been well cared for you will get many more miles out of it. The 2nd gear lube problem has been addressed. The 3rd gear clutch problem is not a clutch problem after all, it's a 3rd and 4th gear sensor problem. In other words an electrical problem causing a mechanical problem. Replace the sensors and the trans should last many more miles.

One thing I've noticed from reading on here is the problem TLs seem to have problems from day one. It sounds weird but if it's gone 102,000 miles with no problems (that you know of) it's likely going to be a good car down the road.

Of course I highly suggest running a good trans fluid like Amsoil or Redline D4 and a very good engine oil like Redline especially since you plan on taking it past 200,000 miles.

How do they have tranny issues? I have 100K on my TL with original tranny and I am hard as hell...But I maintain it all with best fluids. I dont hear every day these trannys going like the 01-03 years.

It's all the way the previous driver drove.
