2002 TL-S vs 2007 Nissan Versa
Well to be honest this isn't really a race since the TL has way more hp and torque than the little nissan. But anyways, I think I might as well share this story with you guys.
So this happened 2 nights ago as I was going home at around 9-10pm here in Vancouver BC. I was travelling on this highway, and this Nissan Versa had been tailgating me the whole time. I wasn't going particularly slow, as I was going at around 120-130km/h (~80mph) in a 90km/h (55mph) zone. Actually, this guy had been going the same way as me and it was cutting in and out of traffic all the time before we got on to the highway. I was in a hurry to get home, plus the fact that whenever I sped up, this Versa would do the same. So I thought may be this person wanted to play. So finally came to the straight part of the highway, and coincidently, there wasn't any car in front of me (at least 1km I guess). So I went WOT, and I guess he did the same too as I didn't lose him right away, but after like 3 seconds or so, I was pulling on him hard, and before long, I could barely see his headlights in my mirror. The result was pretty much expected but what I was more interested is how stable the TL is at high speeds. I went up to (or close to) 200km/h (124mph) before I let go of the gas since I was approaching the cars in front. In the whole acceleration process, 3rd gear was not bad, pulled up to about 160-170km/h (100-106mph). But as soon as it shifted to 4th (btw, I wasn't using SS or gateshifting), the power dropped significantly (the force pushing my back decreased quite a bit), so did the rpm (a bit below 5000rpm I think). However, after a few more seconds, the acceleration suddenly became stronger, and I'm guessing that's when the VTEC started to kick in in 4th gear, I couldn't go WOT anymore though as I had to slow down for traffic. Also, the car seemed to be pretty stable up to 190km/h (118mph) and then the steering started to vibrate more.
So here are a few questions, is that drop in acceleration force normal when the car shifts to 4th gear? Is the vibration at 190km/h+ normal?
By the way, if you want to flame me for being inconsiderate to other road users, you can just skip that part, I know I was stupid for going at such speeds and I will not do it again, at least in the near future.

It's probably your tires that's causing the vibration. I took my TL up to 200KM/H with the winters on and a bit of vibration started. Did it again with the summers and nothing, no vibration whatsoever...

You only really feel that loss of power if you don't hit redline in 3rd before shifting to 4th. It can't be helped. Thats just how our trannys are built.. with an extremely tall 4th gear.
Try it out yourself. Find a nice open space, and try gunning it. In SS mode, Shift before 6000 RPM in 3rd, and you'll notice your RPM drop suddenly. Its even more apparant if you shift before 5000 RPMs. If (for some odd reason) I really want to outrun a guy, I'll pretty much redline it 3rd gear. Not good for the transmission, but meh... its covered until 109k.
If you're not using SS mode, then yeah.. you'll always feel that loss of power when switching to fourth gear in auto mode. I think the ecu is set to shift at 4000 RPMs max.
I usually try to shut down a drag run before having to shift up to 4th. And I rarely want to race on the freeway

my tires are pretty new as I got them 2-3 months ago, and they are the yoko avid v4s, may be the tire pressure is not correct, and the vibration is not very strong. Also my tl is the 2nd gen, and has around 130k km (80000miles) on it, that could be another reason I guess?
I left the car in auto mode, but it only shifted from 3rd to 4th at about 170km/h (106mph), I'm pretty sure the rpm was pretty close to the redline (6500rpm+) as I did take a quick look at the tachometer. But yea, the 4th gear is way too tall, lol, and I could definitely see having a 6-speed conversion would help a whole lot! Anyways, at least now I know when to shut down a race.

'10 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
We should put gears from an Integra Type-R in our trannys, it'll make 4th and 5th gear a whole lot shorter, but it'll also make gas mileage worse too.

I pretty much have the same car as you w/ the Yoko Avid v4s on a WDP TL-S. I myself do feel a little bit of shakiness during high speeds but I feel it much more if I press the brakes 1/2 in coming to a stop...especially braking from highway speeds..
Yea...don't knopw if it's normal but I know what you mean about teh steering wheel shaking..it's actuailly quite violent.

yea, gotta respect the mileage of the TL-S. It actually has better mileage than my 4 cylinder 98 camry (133hp)!
WDP, I have the same color too! THe shakiness you are talking about when going at high speeds only occurs to me once in a while, and it's barely noticable to me, not sure if thats normal though, cause my camry for sure shakes way more violent.
steering vibration, it's not that violent, may be I wasn't going fast enough??
