12 Mpg In Town

12 Mpg In Town
I picked up a new 06 WDP AT TL just over a week ago...when i drove the car around town (60 miles) it took 4.8 gallons to fill back up... (12 mpg)
a few days later, i drove the car to louisville and back (200 miles) and averaged 32 mpg on the highway...which i was very well pleased with.
back in town, i drove another 33 miles and filled up again, and the car needed 2.5 gallons to fill back up... (13.2 mpg)
ive driven the car very nicely...havent been taking off fast or anything. the car has 510 miles on it now...
is this normal gas mileage for driving around town? Perhaps the mileage will get better when the engine is a little more broken in?

Yes it's normal and it will get better. Mine was like that when I got it too, now i'm up to 18 around town with lots of stop lights, and mid 30s on the highway. If i sit at 55, I can get 38-40.
It didn't take long for mine to get better. I now have 1100 miles.

Really depends where you live and how much freeway driving you get to do. Around town in heavy stop and go, I average 14-16 mpg. Mostly highway @ 80 MPH, I average around 26-29 mpg. If I slow down on the highway, mpg goes up. My car has ~24,000 miles.
I suspect that the people that get better mpg do more driving on limited access or semi-rural suburban type roads, than I do.

When my '04 manual TL was brand new, my mileage under the above conditions was running between 22 and 23 MPG.
So where is your "around town' anyway?

when people say city mileage sucks in TL, they really mean it.
I'm getting 16MPG usually. I've been 15MPG few times.
I don't understand why it sucks up so much gas in traffic jam. So much worse than my mustang. I wish I had two tanks of gas where I can select between regular and premium. So I can flip a switch to regular when I'm stuck in traffic.
I'd be happy if I can get 20MPG as advertised. Usually I get 18MPG at best in town.

Initially for my 06 5AT TL, I was getting like 18MPG in the city, but now at 800 miles, I'm getting 22-23MPG in the city. I'm actually very pleased at how much I'm averaging in the city (DC Metro Area). I don't particulary drive aggressive, so maybe that's why. I am somewhat disappointed with my highway mileage though. It appears that I'm averaging the same 22-23MPG on the highway which is quite odd. Maybe I'm not staying long enough on the highway

City MPG absolutely sucks on this car. And to make matters worse, our MPG indicator is only average for the tank, not instantaneous as you drive....DUH !!!! I'm lucky if I get 15 in town.
I had a 2006 TSX loaner last week when I took my car in for service, and low and behold, the new information center HAS a graphical instantaneous MPG guage!

Yes, it is...
It is the average miles per gallon during the break-in period; I had the same thing. Last November when I picked up my car, I was only getting 13 mpg in city driving and about 18 on the highway. However - now I have 7700 miles on my car and I get 20/21 mpg in the city and high twenties for the highway.
It's shitty at first, but it gets better...........

At 70MPH, I'll get around 27ish. 28ish if I do 60-65.
And if do 80 like most people on the turnpikes and interstates, I'll get 25-26.

The averate speed for the first 50 miles was 61 MPH. Then I hit route 95 in Fredericksburg for the next 130 miles, averaging 73 MPH. At the North Carolina line, I traveled another 80 miles to my first stop for gas, food, and restroom. Average speed there was 76 MPH. I deliberately fueled up at a pump which put my TL in about the same downward angle as the initial fillup. By the way, the A/C was running the entire time and we were in my TL.. an '04 manual.
I never rely on the MID for an accurate mileage check; I use it more for a reference. My actual mileage for this leg of the trip was 33.94 MPG.
Lately, my in-town, work commute driving has dropped off to 24 MPG (MID reporting). I'm sure this is due to a lot of road work going on and my work hours. Both have managed to put me in quite a bit of stop and go traffic.

When trying to compare one driver's city (stop-and-go) driving to another, it is helpful to share what your average speed is from the trip computer. That will give us a better idea of how congested your driving really is.
I tend to get about 21-23mpg doing mostly local driving, but I think the average speed is about 25-30 mph which really isn't too bad for local driving.

One on the right for me
There are a ton of highway threads where members report numbers well into the 30mpg range while on road trips and extended highway use.

My around town mileage is a consistent 24 - 25 MPG based on the MID. My average MPH is regularly 28MPH. I have a relatively short commute of 6 miles with really only one stop sign. I do however do some other running around, but again is primarily short trips and as mentioned above still garners 25-25MPH. I recently filled up and was driving on some back roads where I had the average speed at 45-50 and for about 30 miles and was getting 34 MPG. As I have rolled up more miles with my commute, my MPG has steadily dropped to about 27 and expect I will finish around 24 again. Boring but consistent.
Last year (August 05) I did a 800 mile round trip with A/C and averaged 77 MPH - MPG was 34.2 on the way out and 31.8 on the way back.
