07 TL gas mileage (raw data and need advice)
Here is a LINK to some data that I've collected for my 2007 TL on gas/mileage/cost. I do mostly city driving during the week and freeway/city driving during the weekend. The Climate Control is usually set to "auto" (at 72) most of the time.
Is this consistent with what most of you are getting?
I'm not a numbers guy so any advice on how to improve my data collection or calculations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
PS - Freaking SoCal gas is expensive!

I’m surprised that no one has given you the “you need to do a search” response yet.
Anyhow, from what I’ve been hearing your findings seem low. I see a lot of mid to low 20’s for averages.
The dealership was telling me that he gets above 30 consistently in his non Type-S. That was enough for me to get hooked. Now I’m doing my research and finding that some get what you’re getting and others get above 30 consistently. That seems to be quite a range. As long as someone can prove to me that consistent 30’s is possible with moderate driving (not grandma but defiantly not hammering it all of the time) I’m happy.
I’ve also heard people say that with improper engine break-in you can really screw up the gas mileage for the rest of the life of the car. I just find that so hard to believe. Maybe I’m wrong.
Long and short of it… I’m having trouble getting consistent numbers with just the research that I’ve done over the past month.
You seem to be in the group of people not getting the greatest mileage. And with as many miles as you have on your car, you should be getting into the sweet spot of great gas mileage.

It's all about driving habits, and by this I mean more that lead-footedness.
If you take short trips, gas mileage will suffer. Some posters have said as low as 11 mpg.
If you only take long freeway trips, your mileage will be better, above 30.
I'd say you are right about average.
The one long trip you took showed 27, which is good.
That dealer probably saw 30 mpg on a freeway trip, and was stretching the truth a bit.

Looking at your spreadsheet I would say you're doing about normal.
My 03 TL-S gets 18mpg all city and can reach as high as 31mpg all freeway.
Unfortunately 95% of all my driving is in city, mosty to and from work. All I hit just about every damn red light. And there is a shit load let me tell you!
Basically the TL mileage isn't great city wise, but great on the freeway.
I did change my mind slightly when I saw what the fuel enconomy of the M5 was!!!

Thanks for the comments. I don't think I'm a leadfoot (avg 75-80 on the fwys) and don't really gun it between lights. Do you think if I stopped using "auto" on the climate control it might improve gas mileage considering that "auto" is pretty much running the AC?
Sandynmike, you're right about the long trip and that included about 50+ miles of city driving before hitting the road on that tank.

The generally accepted consensus is that running the AC is better for gas mileage than having the windows down, especially on the freeway.
Try it both ways with everything else equal, and let us know what happens.
I think for the performance we get out of the TL, the gas mileage is pretty good. It's the price we have to pay for the class of car it is.
I used to have a crew cab dually with the gas 7.4 liter engine. The best it ever got was 11 mpg, all freeway. I'm glad it's gone.

Pretty standard numbers. I am getting anywhere from 21mpg to 24mpg mostly fwy driving with city on the weekends. The best I've got was a trip to Santa Barbara wine country where I got 28mpg.
I agree with the So Cal gas prices, insane!!!!!
