Hey Guys,
I have been searching to see what would be needed to put paddle shifters on my base 07 TL. The reason I want to do this is when my 06 was S/C the torque steer sucked so it would be nice to keep both hands on the wheels and still be able to shift.

From the research I have done I need a 07-08 Type-S wheel, Clock Spring and thats it. (Airbag from my car will work with the S wheel). Also wondering if anyone has a "DIY" on wiring this.

so far there is no DIY write up yet and there is a post about this but no pics and no result follow up, gl on your project and if you ended up do it then please write up a DIY

 

i could've sworn someone else wanted to this too. i don't think he actually bought the parts but rather, he was sort of theorizing and speculating what parts would be needed along with how to wire up everything. if you're able to find it in search, you should check it out. there could be some good info on that thread.

Buy a Type S.

 

DaeHan, I remember that also, cant remember his handle but I do remember reading about someone wanting to do paddle shifters on a base. I think he did buy the TL-S wheel but ended up selling it in the BM.

Anyway, I will keep looking into it and see what I can figure out. It should be a simple two wire project. I have read all the results from the search area that I could find. I am suprised no one has done this, it was a big topic back when I was on here for my last TL.

This could be interesting. Ill have to see if I can just tap into the wires in the shifter assm to get it to work.

I hate it when people say to buy the S or the car with that feature. Sometimes people don't want to part with their car. They may have mods they don't want to remove or part with or simply the loss on sale and repurchase. I was interested in this mod too but most of the threads turned into how much the Type S owners used the paddles.

I drove a Saab once with the buttons on the front of the wheel. WAY more fun then the setup we have. I think it would be awesome to have paddles or even buttons. I'm still very interested in this mod.

p.s. I believe fsttyms1 over on the 2G TL side re-wired his gate shifter to be down= downshift and up = upshift.....errr wait, he has 6mt i think...

 

That is a very good point but it just has a connector coming out of it with all the wires so i need to know which color wire goes to up and which to down.

 

I wish there was a way to make shifts quicker, my old car changed gears faster than I could count, so did an IS350 I test drove.

It doesn't work that easy. There isn't a wire for up and a wire for down. It's most likely a single wire that operates on changing resistance or impedance, similar to that of steering wheel audio controls. Possibly even data.

Most expensive and complicated part would be adapting the electronics. When a paddle shifter is used to control a transmission, it doesn't get wired directly to the transmission and generally most of the drivetrain electronics have to be replaced/swapped out along with possibly a flash as well.

Unless you've got plenty of money and time to put in the research and development that Honda won't hand over so easily, it's a project that realistically may not happen. Tough to swallow but it's true. I can certainly appreciate wanting to do something like this but in my opinion it's not worth it. To each his own of course.

 

I am going to go with the corporate bean counter and say that this would be implimented as cheaply as possible and the paddles replicate the sport mode on the shifter ie one switch closed for up and the other for down. Most likely the levers complete the circuit that tells the ECM that the Sport mode is active and change gears at the same time

 

From looking in the steering wheel there is three wires. One black that conects to both paddles and one in different colors. I was hoping one was ground and the others was a signal telling the ecu to ether shift up or down. I was hoping I could tap the similar wires in the shifter to get it to do the same thing... this might fail before it even gets off the ground!

I may just have to rip into the car and see what i find. The bad part is its my only car right now so I cant just rip it apart to mess around.

 

That could very well be true as well.

Why not look up the vehicle's wiring? If you can't find it online you can sign up for services like Alldata to pull up full schematics. I'm not sure how expensive it would be as I haven't had to pay for it in a while. I would share the info, but I can't at the risk of losing my job.

I have a type s steering wheel in my 07 base installed for the voice command feature for the navi, if I press the left paddle, the trip meter between A and B changes on the cluster. just my insight...

 

what about the right one?

 

Must be data and/or impedance sensing then.

I installed the Type S wheel in my car last night and all the buttons work just like the old base wheel. Obviously the shifters dont work. When I started this thread I still had plans to supercharge this TL too and now its just going to be my daily and winter car so I think I am just going to say screw it. I am however going to switch over the switches from my base wheel because the red lights on the Type S wheel are just plain UGLY! I never got why they thought putting red lights in the Type S somehow looked better, It was one of the biggest reasons I didnt buy a Type S to begin with!

I'm in the same spot as you are now. I got a hold of a Type S steering wheel and replaced with my old one and everything works prefectly except the paddle shifter. Did you by any chance found out how to wire the thing?

 

It's not wiring, it's impedance/data matching that does the trick. Unfortunately this is still proprietary information.

 

All that has to be done is find out which wire it is that comes from the paddle shifter side and run it through the car and tap it into the correct wire in the shifter on the console. Boom done. I can pull up wire schematics/location of most wires from work. I WILL do a diy fully and everything needed once I get ahold of a type s steering wheel for testing purposes..
